Cardiff: choose your room, then your city dinner

Cardiff suits a food-led short break when you keep the evening close together. The Parkgate Hotel on Westgate Street gives you a heritage city-centre base, dinner in The Sorting Room and the option of a separately booked spa session. For an independent restaurant outing, The Potted Pig is nearby on High Street.

Our current priced Cardiff shortlist contains one hotel with two dinners. The useful decision is therefore how you want to spend the evening, which bedroom makes the occasion and whether spa time justifies the extra spend. For a wider hotel choice, compare the Wales guide.

Our best-for choices

  • Best for a hotel-centred food occasion: The Parkgate with The Sorting Room, for two-AA-Rosette brasserie dining in the former Post Office.
  • Best for an independent restaurant evening: The Parkgate with The Potted Pig, for seasonal British and Welsh cooking in a former bank vault.
  • Best room choice for a romantic occasion: compare The Parkgate's Signature Junior Suite for its bath and adults-only floor, or the Deluxe Junior Suite with Balcony for its city outlook. Both need separate upgrade pricing.
  • Best for spa time in this shortlist: The Parkgate with a pre-booked thermal-suite session; overnight accommodation alone does not include access.
  • Cheapest assembled dinner comparison: The Sorting Room pairing at £312 midweek or £392 weekend, using the recorded £46 dinner component.
  • Best direct offer to compare: the hotel's Couples Escape, advertised from £118 B&B for two, with an optional £60 add-on supplying £30 dinner credit per adult.

The Parkgate: make the room part of the occasion

The Parkgate Hotel brings together Cardiff's old Post Office setting and contemporary bedrooms. We would choose it when you want the castle, central shopping and the evening restaurants within one city area. It also makes a practical arrival by train: the hotel describes Cardiff Central as a seven-minute walk away.

The room categories differ meaningfully. A Superior Queen has a walk-in shower; Deluxe King rooms add space. Some Junior Suites have baths, but not every one. The Signature Junior Suite specifically lists a bath and separate walk-in shower on the adults-only floor. The Deluxe Junior Suite with Balcony has a wraparound terrace and skyline views towards the stadium and castle.

For a romantic stay, select the features rather than simply book a generic upgraded room. A bath, balcony and adults-only-floor allocation are different choices. The £220 midweek and £300 weekend accommodation-and-breakfast components behind our guide do not establish any particular suite at those rates.

The Sorting Room: dinner under the same roof

The Sorting Room has two AA Rosettes and is listed in the Michelin Guide. Guide inclusion is different from a Michelin restaurant star. The setting brings chandeliers, leather seating and the old Post Office's grand rooms to a British-inspired brasserie evening.

We would choose it for the simplest hotel-and-dinner occasion, particularly after a spa session. Its Wellington Experience is a separate signature-dish event, rather than the meal automatically included in every room booking. Dress is smart casual; advertised dinner hours are 6.30pm–9.30pm, with the hotel's reservation calendar providing current availability.

The £312 midweek and £392 weekend guide totals use a recorded £46-per-person three-course table d'hôte dinner component. Check the menu currently offered and any supplements before booking: that comparison does not price unrestricted à la carte choices or the Wellington Experience.

Choose The Sorting Room over The Potted Pig when you want a polished evening in the hotel with no journey afterwards. The Potted Pig makes the stronger case when a separate restaurant and its cooking are the reason for venturing out.

The Potted Pig: a different Cardiff evening

The Potted Pig occupies a former bank vault at 27 High Street, 0.2 miles from The Parkgate in the catalogue. Its seasonal cooking mixes Welsh ingredients with wider influences. The signature potted pork comes with pickles and sourdough; sample mains include slow-braised lamb shoulder and duck with miso-charred cabbage.

The guide totals are £330 midweek and £410 at the weekend, using a £55-per-person dinner allowance. That is £18 more for two than the Sorting Room comparison. We would let the actual menu and the appeal of the vault setting decide whether that difference is worthwhile.

Dinner service is Monday–Thursday from 5.30pm–8.45pm, Friday from 5.30pm–9.30pm and Saturday from 5pm–9.30pm. Sunday hours are noon–6pm, so plan an earlier meal and confirm the Sunday menu rather than expect a late dinner.

Although the entrance is down stairs, the restaurant states it has lift access from street level. Check your specific access needs when reserving. The hotel and restaurant are separate businesses and bookings, even though the distance is short.

A direct offer worth comparing carefully

The hotel's current Couples Escape advertises B&B from £118 per room per night for two. Adding £60 supplies £30 towards dinner for each adult, giving an advertised starting combination of £178 before any excess restaurant spend. Room availability and dates determine whether that starting price applies.

This is a dinner-credit offer, not a guaranteed three-course meal at £30. If your order costs more, pay the difference. The hotel also advertises Signature Collection upgrades from an additional £40. Compare the final room, menu and dates with the £312/£392 assembled guide rather than treat the headline figures as equivalent products.

For a spa afternoon and a romantic room

The Parkgate's sixth-floor spa has a thermal suite and hydrotherapy pool, with panoramic city views and treatment rooms that can accommodate a couples' arrangement. The thermal session must be booked in advance and is excluded from ordinary overnight stays and spa treatments.

The hotel's published resident rates are approximately £32 per person Monday–Thursday and £42–£44 Friday–Sunday; its information pages currently show slightly different figures, so confirm the charge on the booking screen. For two people, allow roughly another £64 midweek or £84–£88 at the weekend before treatments.

Choose the session time first, then leave room to return to your bedroom before dinner. If a larger resort spa or countryside setting matters more than a city break, explore the spa deals and wider Welsh comparisons.

Can I bring a dog?

The Parkgate's published terms do not permit pets in any part of the hotel, with an exception for assistance animals. There is therefore no confirmed pet-dog option in this priced Cardiff shortlist. For a dog-friendly Welsh break, compare the King's Head in our Swansea and Gower guide, including the appropriate bedroom and dining area.

Keep the itinerary and arrival simple

Build the afternoon around Cardiff's central streets and castle area, then return for your chosen dinner or spa booking. The Parkgate has no on-site parking or baggage drop-off point outside, so arrange parking and the walk to reception in advance. Stadium events can also affect road access, restaurant demand and room prices.

Is dinner automatically included in my room?

No. The assembled guide totals combine a one-night room-and-breakfast sample with a meal component. A room reservation does not secure a restaurant table. The direct Couples Escape's optional add-on is a specific dining credit, with its own terms. Drinks, service, upgrades, spa access and parking can change the total.
