A Chilterns dinner, bed and breakfast break can mean a small village inn, a spa hotel near Marlow or a formal country-house dinner near Aylesbury. Danesfield House is the useful starting point for a spa stay without immediately moving into the top price bracket. Hartwell House makes the stronger case for a more formal hotel and restaurant occasion.
Some results sit around the area’s edges: Reading and Henley suit different travel plans from a bedroom in the hills. Compare the actual base as carefully as the dinner price.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best starting point for spa value: Danesfield House — £260 midweek for two, using a dinner allowance, in a country-house setting near Marlow
- Best formal country-house occasion: Hartwell House — two AA Rosettes, three-course dinner and a £565 midweek comparison
- Lowest weekend comparison, at the urban edge: Malmaison Reading — £195 for two with a three-course prix fixe; choose Reading deliberately rather than expecting a rural stay
- Lower-cost village-inn choice: The Potters Arms — £235 for two, with a modelled dinner allowance and a Winchmore Hill base near Amersham
Danesfield House or Hartwell House?
Danesfield House has the more approachable spa-hotel comparison: £260 midweek or £300 weekend with dinner at the Orangery. Its dinner amount is an allowance, so the attraction is the combination of setting, hotel and spa rather than a precisely priced award-winning menu.
Hartwell House asks for considerably more: £565 midweek and £575 weekend. The restaurant’s two AA Rosettes and the £85 three-course dinner give the food choice a firmer basis. We would favour it for a formal country-house occasion or a romantic stay where the house itself is central to the trip.
The £305 midweek gap is substantial. If the priority is spa time followed by an enjoyable hotel supper, start with Danesfield and check the access included in your chosen room rate. If you actively want Hartwell’s setting and more formal dining, the higher spend has a clearer purpose. It is not simply a higher price for the same evening.
A restaurant closure to bear in mind
Hurley House’s restaurant is closed for rebranding. The hotel remains open and offers residents preordered food platters, but we are not recommending its former omakase dinner until the restaurant reopens and the new menu is confirmed.
The Potters Arms in Winchmore Hill near Amersham and the Chequers Inn in Wooburn Common are the lower-cost inn options, at £235 and £245 respectively. Both use dinner allowances. With only £10 between the comparisons, we would choose the village and bedroom that fit the trip rather than claim one serves better food from the numbers alone.
Hotel du Vin Henley is £270 midweek and £290 weekend, also with a dinner allowance. Its former-brewery setting and Henley base make it more of a town-and-river break than a walking inn. It is the option to consider when you want to spend time in Henley itself.
Malmaison Reading is cheaper in the weekend comparison at £195, with a three-course prix fixe. Reading is an urban alternative at the edge of this itinerary. It can make sense for a rail-based trip, but it will not reproduce an inn stay in the Chiltern hills.
Dogs and romance need a specific room choice
Hartwell and Danesfield both offer selected dog-friendly accommodation, with important restrictions. At Hartwell, pet rooms are in Hartwell Court rather than the main house. At Danesfield, selected rooms and the Cocktail Bar welcome dogs; do not assume the Orangery table does too.
For a couple travelling without a dog, Hartwell is our formal romantic pick. With a dog, choose an approved room and evening dining arrangement before judging the property by its most photogenic bedroom. The table compares the listed room basis, not every special room category.

If a different destination would suit you better
Compare Oxford if you want a city break, comparing the central Randolph with the quieter Cotswold Lodge rather than an out-of-town hotel.
Compare the North Wessex Downs if Bowood’s two-Rosette restaurant and spa appeal as a western countryside alternative.
Compare the Cotswolds if you want to extend the search to Michelin-Starred country-house dining and a broader spa shortlist.
