Lisburn and Hillsborough: a town stay with a country-pub evening

Lisburn works well when you want a modern, convenient hotel and an evening out in Hillsborough. Haslem Hotel gives you a base in Lisburn Square; The Parson's Nose supplies the characterful dining-pub setting. The journey between them is part of the plan, so this is a stay to choose when the restaurant outing appeals.

There is currently one priced pairing in our Lisburn shortlist. Rather than rank a single hotel against itself, we compare what it does well and when a different Northern Ireland stay would suit the occasion better.

Our choices for this kind of break

  • Best for a Hillsborough pub-food outing: Haslem with The Parson's Nose, combining a town-centre bedroom with dinner in a Georgian village pub.
  • Best for transport convenience: Haslem, beside Lisburn Bus Station and a short walk from the railway station. Arrange onward transport to dinner.
  • Best for value in the current local shortlist: the £215-for-two Haslem pairing, midweek or weekend, before transport and drinks.
  • For a grander romantic or spa occasion: compare The Merchant in Belfast, with its distinctive bedrooms, spa and restaurants in the hotel.

The room: decide how much space you want

Haslem Hotel is a four-star property at 15 Lisburn Square. Its contemporary rooms are offered as Snug, Comfy and Roomy, alongside self-catering apartments. Snug rooms have king-size beds and rainfall showers; Comfy rooms add space, with twin configurations also offered. Roomy accommodation and apartments provide different layouts rather than an automatic inclusion in the guide rate.

We would choose Haslem for a practical short stay where you expect to spend the afternoon exploring and the evening out. For couples, select the room size that makes the return after dinner comfortable. If an apartment appeals, confirm its breakfast basis separately rather than assume a self-catering booking matches a hotel B&B rate.

Check-in is from 3pm and departure by noon. The hotel's underground car park has lift access and currently costs up to £6 per day. Entry closes at 11pm, although vehicles can still exit. That matters if you plan to return late in your own car.

The Parson's Nose: the reason to make the excursion

The Parson's Nose is at 48 Lisburn Street in Royal Hillsborough, in a former Georgian townhouse with a covered beer garden overlooking the castle lake. The style is a relaxed dining pub, with local beers, seafood, dry-aged steaks and wood-fired sourdough pizzas.

The sample menu shows the range: haddock-and-bacon chowder, cod with mussels and curry velouté, or braised ox cheek with polenta. A pub classic or pizza makes a different meal from a three-course selection with steak. Choose from the actual menu rather than assume the £50-per-person allowance represents every dinner.

Food is served daily from noon. Published hours end at 8.30pm on Sunday and Monday, and 9.30pm Tuesday–Saturday. Reserve the evening table and confirm the kitchen timing before arranging the room. We would choose this pairing for the village pub atmosphere and its food; a hotel with its own restaurant is more convenient if returning upstairs immediately after dinner matters most.

The journey and the best-value comparison

The catalogue distance between Haslem and The Parson's Nose is 4.2 miles. Plan a taxi or your preferred transport in both directions and get a fare estimate. It is an outing from Lisburn to Hillsborough, rather than a short walk from the hotel.

The indicative £215 total comprises £115 for one night's accommodation and breakfast for two, plus a £50 dinner allowance per person. The same guide total appears midweek and at the weekend, making the pairing worth comparing for a Saturday stay. It remains a sampled rate: confirm the room and meal on your dates.

Would dinner in Haslem work better?

Haslem has its own dining and bar facilities. The hotel currently directs guests to its Lobby Monday–Thursday and Haslem Kitchen Friday–Sunday, with breakfast served daily from 7am–11am. Its dining page advertises à la carte, early-dining and vegan options.

That is a useful alternative when you want a simpler evening or a meal in the hotel, but it needs its own price and service check. The Parson's Nose total does not establish a Haslem dinner package. Compare the two evenings after adding the Hillsborough taxi, rather than assume the off-site option is always cheapest.

Romance, spa time and bringing a dog

For a relaxed couples' break, combine a room with enough space and an unhurried Hillsborough afternoon before dinner. The castle and gardens offer a natural focus for the visit; check admission and opening dates before building the itinerary around them.

If you want the hotel itself to provide the grand setting and spa afternoon, compare the Belfast guide and The Merchant. Haslem's town-and-pub pairing is a different proposition, and we have not priced a spa experience into it.

We do not have a confirmed pet-dog bedroom-and-dinner arrangement for this pairing. Get agreement from both Haslem and The Parson's Nose before booking with a dog. Hillsborough Castle's gardens and café also exclude pet dogs, so check your afternoon plans as well.

Is this an inclusive dinner, bed and breakfast offer?

The guide combines a hotel B&B component with a separately reserved dinner allowance. It is not an inclusive offer sold by Haslem or The Parson's Nose. Drinks, service where applicable, parking, transport and room upgrades change the total. Confirm both bookings before paying for the stay.
