Northern Ireland: a city evening, a country house or a lakeside escape?
A Northern Ireland food break is easiest to choose by deciding how you want to spend the hours around dinner. Belfast gives you restaurants and music close together. Derry combines a river-view hotel with the historic city across the Peace Bridge. Ardtara offers a small country-house evening, while Lough Erne makes the landscape, spa and resort part of the stay.
Our five priced hotel choices also include a lower-cost Lisburn and Hillsborough pairing. They differ in more than location: the meals range from two courses to a five-course dinner, some restaurants are off site, and spa treatments need their own booking. The best choice is the stay that fits the occasion.
Our best-for recommendations
- Best for a romantic country-house food break: Ardtara Country House, for individually designed rooms, fireplaces in selected categories and dinner in the house.
- Best for a luxury city occasion: The Merchant in Belfast, with AA Red Stars, Victorian and Art Deco room styles and Berts’ live jazz.
- Best for a lakeside spa and resort stay: Lough Erne Resort, with the Thai Spa and Catalina dinner in Fermanagh.
- Best for a city visit with river views and spa facilities: The Ebrington, on Derry’s Waterside beside the Peace Bridge.
- Best value for a five-course hotel dinner in this comparison: Lough Erne with Catalina, at £269 midweek or £319 weekend, on the current sampled room basis.
- Best direct country-house offer to compare: Ardtara’s four-course DBB break, advertised from £310 for two, subject to dates and room availability.
- Cheapest indicative pairing: Haslem Hotel with The Parson’s Nose, at £215 for two, with dinner in Hillsborough and transport extra.
Five stays worth comparing
Ardtara: our intimate country-house choice
Ardtara Country House in Upperlands is the stay we would compare first for a quieter romantic occasion. Its rooms have individual character, with period furniture and original features. Superior rooms have working fireplaces; the first-floor Master Room adds dual-aspect woodland and garden views and a bath with shower. Price the category that matters to you.
The dining room’s seasonal cooking uses local suppliers and produce from the house gardens. The sample dinner menu is £57.95 per person, with dishes such as salmon with ponzu, monkfish with miso and kimchi, and mushroom tortellini. Supplements and actual menu choices affect the final bill.
Our catalogue totals of £355 midweek and £375 weekend use a higher £75 dinner estimate. Compare those with the hotel’s direct offers: four-course dinner, bed and breakfast from £155 per person, or £310 for two. Its autumn offer starts at £132.50 per person, or £265 for two, for a two-course dinner, B&B and arrival tea or coffee with scones on selected September–November 2026 dates. These buy different meals and are starting prices rather than guaranteed rates.
Current dining hours are Wednesday–Saturday dinner, 5pm–9pm, and Sunday dinner, 5.30pm–7.30pm. We would choose Ardtara over Lough Erne when a characterful house and dinner matter more than resort facilities. Choose Lough Erne for the broader spa-and-lakeside itinerary.
Lough Erne: spa, landscape and Catalina dinner
Lough Erne Resort is our lakeside luxury and spa choice near Enniskillen. Its peninsula setting, golf courses and range of rooms, suites and lodges give you reasons to stay on the estate during the day. A lake-view room or lodge is a specific accommodation choice, with its own rate.
The Catalina serves five courses at £59.50 per person, drawing on seasonal Northern Irish produce. Dinner is Monday–Saturday, 6.30pm–9pm. Sunday service is lunch, so a Sunday overnight stay needs a different evening arrangement.
The guide totals are £269 midweek and £319 at the weekend, using a £150/£200 room-and-breakfast component. That is a useful value comparison for a resort stay and five-course meal. It does not establish a lake-view suite at the same price.
The Thai Spa has a pool, sauna and steam room, with treatments reserved separately. The resort’s direct Taste of Lough Erne offer expressly includes five-course Catalina dinner, breakfast and access to those facilities. Compare the room and access terms when choosing between a package and separate components. We would choose Lough Erne over The Merchant when the landscape and time at the hotel take precedence over city restaurants and nightlife.
The Merchant: our grand Belfast evening
The Merchant is the luxury-city comparison, in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter. Choose a Victorian bedroom for period character or an Art Deco room for a different style; upgrades and suites need their own quote. Its hotel AA Red Stars recognise the accommodation experience independently of restaurant awards.
For dinner in the hotel, Berts Jazz Bar combines French bistro cooking with live jazz. The £333 midweek guide uses its £36.50 three-course Early Jazz menu, served Monday–Thursday, 5pm–6.30pm. The catalogue’s £518 weekend arithmetic uses that same menu allowance, although the offer is unavailable for Friday and Saturday dinner. Reprice the actual weekend menu; reservations from 8.30pm on those nights also have a £10-per-person stage charge.
For an independent restaurant, compare Waterman at £355 midweek/£540 weekend or Coppi at £360/£545. Waterman is a European-influenced bistro, 0.1 miles from the hotel; Coppi offers Italian cicchetti and handmade pasta, 0.2 miles away. Waterman opens Wednesday–Sunday and Coppi is closed Sunday.
The Merchant’s rooftop hot tub, sauna and steam room are distinct from its spa hydrotherapy and treatment facilities. Arrange spa sessions separately. We would choose it over Ardtara for an evening with music and a walkable city setting. Our Belfast guide compares the three dinners in more detail.
The Ebrington: a Derry base with dinner and a river outlook
The Ebrington Hotel is on the Waterside of Derry/Londonderry, with the Peace Bridge connecting the area to the historic city. It suits a cultural city visit with dinner in the hotel and optional spa time. Select a Deluxe River View room if the outlook is a priority, rather than assume every bedroom faces the Foyle.
The two-AA-Rosette Oak Room is led by Leigh Thurston and serves modern Irish cooking with local ingredients. The £226 midweek and £281 weekend guide totals use a £48-per-person two-course dinner. Compare that meal basis carefully with Catalina’s five courses or Ardtara’s four-course package. The Corner House pub provides a different, more casual meal to price separately.
The spa has a hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room, with treatments requiring advance reservation. Confirm the thermal access included in your room or package and the current hours, as the hotel’s spa and thermal pages publish differing schedules. We would choose Ebrington for Derry’s river-and-city itinerary; The Merchant offers a more elaborate hotel setting and a different Belfast restaurant scene.
Haslem and The Parson’s Nose: the lower-cost pub outing
Haslem Hotel gives you a contemporary bedroom in Lisburn Square, close to bus and rail transport. Dinner is at The Parson’s Nose in Hillsborough, 4.2 miles away in the catalogue. Reserve transport in both directions: the meal is not in the hotel.
The £215 midweek and weekend comparison uses £115 for B&B and a £50 dinner allowance per person. The pub offers seafood, steaks, classic dishes and wood-fired pizzas in a former Georgian townhouse. Food is served daily from noon, with published closing times of 8.30pm Sunday–Monday and 9.30pm Tuesday–Saturday.
Choose it for a relaxed Hillsborough afternoon and pub evening with a practical Lisburn base. The Ebrington’s £226 midweek headline is close, but describes a different two-course hotel dinner in another city. Add transport before deciding which offers better value for your trip. The Lisburn guide covers room sizes and the hotel’s own dining alternative.
Compare the price with the meal
The smallest total is Haslem’s off-site pairing, but Catalina’s five-course dinner makes Lough Erne an especially useful food-and-resort comparison. Ardtara’s direct four-course break can undercut its separate estimated components. The Merchant’s weekend room increase is substantial, so moving the trip to a qualifying midweek Early Jazz night can make more difference than changing restaurants.

Bringing a dog?
A dog-friendly meal needs to fit the accommodation as well as the restaurant. The Merchant permits guide dogs with advance notice, rather than pet dogs. We have not confirmed a complete pet-bedroom-and-dinner arrangement for the other priced pairings, so cannot name an evidenced best-for-dogs winner from this shortlist.
Use our dog-friendly deals page, then confirm the exact bedroom, permitted dining area and menu. A resort’s separate self-catering accommodation should not be assumed to share the hotel room’s policy, breakfast or price.
Give the destination room in the itinerary
Belfast and Lisburn suit different versions of a short urban break; Hillsborough can form the afternoon around the Haslem pairing. Derry rewards a stay focused on the river and historic city. Upperlands makes Ardtara a country-house base, while Enniskillen and the Fermanagh lakes give Lough Erne a more self-contained resort itinerary. Pick one area for an unhurried overnight occasion rather than fit all five into a single weekend.
Can I plan a Sunday dinner?
Check the restaurant specifically. Catalina advertises Sunday lunch rather than dinner, and Coppi is closed. Waterman and Berts offer Sunday service; Ardtara serves dinner from 5.30pm–7.30pm, and The Parson’s Nose serves food until its earlier Sunday closing time. Confirm the applicable meal with the room reservation.
What is included in a guide total?
The catalogue comparisons combine a sampled one-night room-and-breakfast rate for two with the recorded menu or dinner allowance. They are not automatically inclusive hotel packages. Direct offers are labelled separately. Drinks, service, upgrades, spa treatments and transport can change the total; compare the same room and meal before deciding what offers best value.
