Description

Watersmeet Hotel

Watersmeet looks out over the North Devon coast from Mortehoe, with Woolacombe’s long beach nearby and a smaller beach directly below the hotel. The sea is the defining feature of the stay, shaping the view from many rooms and the mood of dinner in Rocks Restaurant. With 28 bedrooms, pools and a separate family dining option, it offers a coastal hotel break that can be restful, active or a little of both.

Why we like it

The two-AA-Rosette restaurant gives the sea-view setting a culinary reason to visit. A walk on the coast, time by the pool and dinner without another journey make a pleasing sequence. The important upgrade is often the room’s outlook rather than simply its size.

Eat

Rocks Restaurant

Rocks is the on-site two-AA-Rosette restaurant, with the coastline providing a strong visual backdrop to dinner. Head chef John Cairns’ kitchen draws on the surrounding region: Exmoor lamb and venison, and day-boat fish landed at Brixham, are among the ingredients the hotel highlights. That gives the menu a connection to both the inland landscape and the sea.

The style is contemporary British hotel dining rather than a single mandatory tasting-menu format. Seasonal produce and changing fish availability matter more than a permanently fixed signature dish. Read the current menu when reserving and let the day’s fish choices help shape the meal. A seafood-led dinner can be especially appropriate here, but the regional meat dishes mean the coast is not the only influence.

The restaurant’s setting suits an unhurried evening. Try to leave time for a drink while there is still light on the water, then take dinner as a separate part of the day. Rocks is advertised for lunch, tea and dinner, but children under eight are not admitted for dinner; families need to choose the appropriate dining room rather than assume one restaurant serves every occasion.

Palms

Palms is a separate on-site alternative, useful for a more relaxed meal and for families with younger children. The hotel offers children’s high tea between 5pm and 6pm by arrangement. Discuss the family’s timings with the hotel when booking, especially if adults hope to eat later in Rocks.

These two venues serve different needs. For a couple’s food break, Rocks is the main destination. For a family stay, Palms may make the evening easier, with the pools and beach providing the rest of the day’s entertainment. A restaurant name on the booking is therefore more useful than a general promise of dinner.

Sleep

There are 28 bedrooms, with sea views in many categories and some larger suites and terrace options. The view is worth choosing explicitly: a coastal location does not mean every bedroom offers the same outlook. Ground-floor terrace accommodation gives a different relationship to the landscape from an upper-floor room. Family layouts also vary, so agree beds and bathroom arrangements before arrival. If a room is intended to be the place where you spend a quiet afternoon as well as sleep, prioritise the view and seating space.

Retreat

Indoor and outdoor pools, a hot tub and steam facilities allow the hotel to fill a less energetic day. The coast offers a more active alternative, with access to the beach below and the wider walking opportunities around Mortehoe and Woolacombe. The descent to the beach and coastal paths should be considered separately from room accessibility. On a two-night visit, give one day to walking and the other to a slower swim-and-lunch rhythm; the changing weather can help decide the order.

What guests say

The coastal location and views are the clearest strengths in the Google review profile, with service and dining also attracting considerably more praise than criticism. Bedroom comments are generally favourable. The smaller body of sleep-related feedback is more mixed, so it is sensible to choose the room category and position deliberately rather than assume that every room delivers the same seaside experience.

The Gourmet Getaway

The indicative Gourmet Getaway price combines one night’s accommodation and breakfast for two with dinner for two at the selected restaurant. Use the current price panel to compare options, then check the room and restaurant for your dates. Any official hotel package is shown separately, with its own inclusions and terms.

Worth knowing

  • Rocks does not admit children under eight for dinner. Arrange Palms or children’s high tea if travelling with younger children.
  • Choose the sea-view category deliberately, and check the route to the beach if steps or steep paths are a concern.

The Gourmet Getaways view

A convincing coastal food break when you pair Rocks with a room that makes the most of the sea. We would give it two nights if possible: enough time for a substantial walk, a quiet pool session and one evening when dinner is the only appointment.
