Hartwell House combines three things that often sit separately: genuine National Trust country-house history, AA-recognised dining and a proper spa. It suits guests who want the classic English manor-house atmosphere without giving up a pool, treatments and wellness facilities.
Hartwell House combines three things that often sit separately: genuine National Trust country-house history, AA-recognised dining and a proper spa. It suits guests who want the classic English manor-house atmosphere without giving up a pool, treatments and wellness facilities.
Hartwell House's main restaurant is the elegant Soane Room, where Executive Head Chef Daniel Richardson serves modern British cooking built around local and seasonal produce. The restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes and the atmosphere is properly country-house: polished service, historic surroundings and a more formal tone than a gastropub or hotel bistro.
Dinner is offered as a two- or three-course Bill of Fare, with dishes changing with the season. The restaurant's official guidance describes the cooking as wholesome, flavoursome and imaginative rather than highly experimental. Dinner is served daily from 7pm to 9pm.
The dress code is smart; jackets and ties are not compulsory, but trainers, tracksuits and shorts are not accepted. The restaurant is on site, so the whole evening can be built around the house without travelling elsewhere.
The 48-room hotel spreads accommodation between the historic house and associated estate buildings. Expect traditional country-house styling rather than minimal modern design; the appeal is living inside the architecture and grounds for a night or two.
Hartwell Spa includes an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna, steam room, gym and treatments. The hotel sits in around 90 acres, so a spa session can be combined with a gentle estate walk instead of the break feeling entirely indoors.
The hotel's setting in Aylesbury makes it a natural base for the surrounding area as well as a place to stay for dinner. For a two-night break, allow time outside the dining room rather than treating the property as a one-evening stop.
Indicative build-your-own Gourmet Getaway: the indicative price shown in the price panel combines our current accommodation-and-breakfast benchmark with the selected restaurant's dining cost for two. It is designed for comparison and research and is not an official hotel package price. Because accommodation and menu prices can change, use the live price panel as the current indicative figure.
Winter Break from £149: Accommodation, cooked breakfast, £25pp dinner allowance, spa use and £20pp spa-treatment voucher. Sunday-Thursday; valid 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027 with stated festive/Valentine blackout dates.

Current Google feedback is especially strong for the property, atmosphere, service and natural setting. Spa and wellness feedback is positive overall but more mixed than the hotel's core country-house experience, which is useful context for dedicated spa travellers.
Hartwell House & Spa works best when the hotel, restaurant and setting are treated as one trip rather than three separate bookings. Choose the room and dinner first, then use the surrounding time to make the break feel like a proper retreat.
Based on one night's accommodation and breakfast for two, plus dinner for two. The dinner menu or number of courses is shown below where known.
