Description

Overview

Fowlescombe Farm is a ten-suite retreat in the foothills of Dartmoor, where a working farm provides the setting and much of the purpose of the stay. Converted stone barns and a Victorian farmhouse house the accommodation, while meals and activities bring guests into contact with the landscape rather than keeping it at a distance. The small scale makes it a particularly appealing choice for couples who want space and thoughtful design without the feel of a large resort.

The hotel holds one MICHELIN Key. Its standard rates include breakfast, afternoon cake, a four-course dinner each evening and a programme of farm activities. That makes it a genuinely food-led overnight break, with the principal meals already arranged. Compare the complete stay rate with dinner, bed and breakfast elsewhere; a separate dinner allowance must not be added to Fowlescombe’s inclusive resident tariff.

Eat

The Refectory is the on-site restaurant, where the farm and nearby producers shape what reaches the table. The kitchen’s approach is rooted in seasonality and the relationship between growing, raising and cooking food. Dinner for resident guests is four courses, providing a focal point to the evening without requiring a separate journey or restaurant search.

Breakfast is served in the Refectory, and cake in the Farmhouse at 3pm gives the day another welcoming pause. A private Greenhouse setting can be arranged for a group occasion, for a more intimate celebration. Tell the team about dietary requirements when reserving the stay, so the included dinners can be planned properly. Wine, bespoke experiences and other extras need to be checked against the chosen booking.

Sleep

The ten suites differ considerably in size and layout. All have individually chosen furnishings and locally made super-king beds; natural stone, oak and wool connect the interiors to the farm. A Garden Studio offers a compact, private base with meadow access and a kitchenette, while larger barn accommodation adds more substantial living and cooking space.

The choice matters for a longer stay. Long Barn and Tall Barn provide two-bedroom arrangements suited to friends or families; other suites have separate sitting rooms, terraces, distinctive views or a bath as part of their individual layout. Ask for the precise floor plan if stairs, a bath or twin beds are important. Kitchens in some suites add flexibility, but the included breakfast and dinner mean cooking is an option rather than a necessity.

Retreat

The activity programme is part of every stay and changes with the season and the farm’s work. Tours, bread-making, yoga, garden activities and food-focused sessions provide ways to understand the place and join in. There is no need to turn the visit into a packed itinerary: one activity, a walk and time in the suite can make a satisfying day before dinner.

Bespoke outings are arranged separately and carry their own charges. These can include guided Dartmoor walks, stargazing or a paddleboard outing towards a Devon pub. Confirm which experiences are included and which need advance booking. The emphasis here is on the land and outdoor life; we have not represented farm activities or wild swimming as an on-site spa or a hotel swimming pool.
