Edinbane Lodge – Edinbane Lodge
Overview
Tucked into the wild, green landscape at the head of Loch Greshornish on the Isle of Skye, Edinbane Lodge is a striking 16th-century hunting lodge reborn as a destination for discerning food lovers and seekers of Highland peace. Halfway between Portree and Dunvegan, this boutique restaurant-with-rooms offers an immersive gourmet escape that’s ideal for a one or two-night break, blending modern Scottish fine dining with deep island heritage. Its waterside setting and access to the untouched northern Skye coastline makes it especially appealing for walkers, nature fans, and anyone wanting a Highlands adventure flavoured by some of Scotland’s best food.
Eat
The Edinbane Lodge restaurant, led by chef patron Calum Montgomery, continues to set the culinary pace for Skye, earning four AA Rosettes and a place in the Michelin Guide. Montgomery’s ingredients are plucked from the surrounding land and sea – think hand-dived scallops, wild venison, island greens and locally foraged herbs. The cooking style layers Highland traditions with contemporary techniques; expect each plate to tell a story of Skye’s produce and climate. The restaurant's widely praised tasting menu captures the raw essence of the region, with courses that may feature cod with romesco and leek, local mussels finished with foraged sea vegetables, or Highland Wagyu beef with preserved truffle. The kitchen has a strong seasonal rhythm, respecting what’s available from Skye’s crofters, fishermen and growers. Service is informed but relaxed, and the dining rooms themselves retain a warm, stone-walled intimacy.
Sleep
Upstairs, Edinbane Lodge offers a small collection of individually styled rooms balancing old-world character with contemporary Highland luxury. Each is furnished to reflect the changing tones of Skye’s skies and hills, with hand-chosen fabrics and deep-comfort beds. Bathrooms are modern and plush; some feature free-standing tubs for a proper post-hike soak. This is boutique accommodation made for food lovers – expect breakfast to rival dinner for quality. Couples, solo travellers and small groups all find space to unwind amid the tranquil setting and bespoke generosity that makes a visit here genuinely restorative.
Retreat
While the focus at Edinbane Lodge rests on the plate and in the glass, the surrounding island is its own reward. The lodge’s riverside lawns lend themselves to a pre-dinner stroll with views up towards the Quiraing, while nearby, you’ll find pristine lochs, ancient castles and deserted beaches. The iconic Fairy Pools and Old Man of Storr are each within a 40-minute drive, while Portree’s harbour is around 12 miles (roughly 25 minutes by car). After a day on winding Skye roads or rugged footpaths, returning to this snug, quietly luxurious base for world-class cooking is one of Scotland’s great pleasures. The Lodge has secure parking on site, and makes a comfortable base for those touring the Highlands by car.
