York’s strongest dinner, bed and breakfast choices are not all the same kind of evening. Hotel du Vin and Malmaison offer dinner in the hotel. Malmaison also has Sora for a Japanese rooftop restaurant occasion. No. 1 by GuestHouse is paired here with a separately booked dinner at Skosh.
The Black Swan at Oldstead is a worthwhile countryside alternative, but it is not a York city stay. Our city comparison below keeps that distinction clear so a romantic dinner does not unexpectedly become a rural itinerary.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best lower-priced confirmed hotel-dinner lead: Malmaison York with Chez Mal — £255 midweek for two, using a dinner allowance in the hotel
- Best for a rooftop dinner occasion: Malmaison York with Sora — Japanese dining on the seventh floor, at £285 midweek; check its service days
- Best boutique hotel and independent food pairing: No. 1 by GuestHouse with Skosh — £305 midweek, combining a Clifton hotel with a separate small-plates dinner
- Best alternative for a traditional bistro stay: Hotel du Vin York — a former Victorian orphanage on the Mount, at £275 midweek or £325 weekend
- Lowest figure to investigate, with dinner to confirm: Wheatlands Lodge — £230 for two, but estimated pricing and the current resident dinner service need checking
Malmaison York with Chez Mal is £255 midweek and £335 weekend, using a modelled dinner allowance. Hotel du Vin York is £275 midweek and £325 weekend, also with a dinner allowance.
That means Malmaison leads by £20 midweek, while Hotel du Vin is £10 lower at weekends. We would choose the room, location and building you prefer rather than declare one a permanent cheapest winner. Malmaison is on Rougier Street; Hotel du Vin is on the Mount, in a converted Victorian orphanage.
Both keep the priced dinner at the hotel. That is a useful advantage if you want a straightforward evening with no second venue to coordinate. The table’s allowances still need matching to the meal you actually want to order.
When Sora makes Malmaison a different trip
Sora gives Malmaison another role: a Japanese restaurant occasion on the seventh floor rather than a conventional hotel brasserie dinner. Its comparison is £285 midweek and £365 weekend, £30 above Chez Mal on the same hotel basis.
That is a modest extra budget if the rooftop setting and Japanese cooking are the reason for choosing it. We would pick Sora for that particular kind of romantic evening, not claim its allowance proves better food than every other York restaurant.
Its published service pattern excludes Monday and Tuesday, apart from certain exceptions such as bank holidays. It also does not allow dogs inside or on the terrace. Those details need to fit the stay before the room is booked.
No. 1 and Skosh: a food-led boutique break
No. 1 by GuestHouse with Skosh is £305 midweek and £385 weekend for two. Skosh is a separate restaurant, about 0.6 miles from the hotel in the listing. It is an independent small-plates evening, not dinner in No. 1’s own Pearly Cow restaurant.
We would choose this pairing for a couple who want the boutique hotel stay and that specific food evening together. The hotel’s cellar treatment rooms add another option for time in the building, but treatments need their own booking; this is not a swimming-pool spa comparison.
Skosh’s published service runs Wednesday to Saturday. Align the table reservation with the room first. Compared with Malmaison’s Chez Mal figure, the midweek step up is £50; it buys a different hotel and a different dinner, rather than an upgrade to the same meal.
Wheatlands Lodge and the cheapest figure
Wheatlands Lodge is the lowest comparison at £230 for two. This is the York property on Scarcroft Road, not the similarly named Lake District hotel.
Its dinner is an estimate rather than menu-derived, and the midweek room figure is estimated too. We would investigate it for a lower-cost stay, but confirm the hotel’s current resident dinner service before relying on that total. It cannot yet displace the better-established dinner arrangements as our first value recommendation.
Dogs, spa expectations and a countryside alternative
No. 1 accepts dogs in selected room types, excluding its Small Guest Rooms. Its restaurant is dog free, while the bar and Marmalade Lounge offer possible dining arrangements with a dog. The separately priced Skosh evening has its own policy to check. Malmaison and Hotel du Vin are other pet-room leads; reserve the room and table together.
Malmaison’s York spa is treatment-led and does not provide a swimming-pool resort stay. No. 1’s cellar spa is also primarily about treatments. If swimming and a larger spa are central to the brief, look beyond these city pairings.
For a Michelin-Starred countryside food break, consider the Black Swan at Oldstead through our North York Moors guide. It is a deliberate alternative to York, with its own room and dining arrangements, rather than a city result to book without noticing the location.

If a different destination would suit you better
Compare the North York Moors if the Black Swan at Oldstead or another countryside restaurant-with-rooms stay is a better fit than a York city hotel.
Compare Leeds if a full pool-and-spa hotel is the missing ingredient, with Thorpe Park an out-of-centre alternative rather than another York treatment room.
