The Great Bustard is the current food-led stay to consider in our Salisbury selection. It is in Great Durnford, in the Woodford Valley, rather than in the city centre. Choose it for a village setting, dinner and a small collection of thoughtfully designed rooms, with Salisbury as an outing rather than the view from the doorstep.
The choice here is about the kind of stay you want: a meal in the main restaurant, a more informal pub evening, or a night away with your dog. The room and dining arrangements make a real difference.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Our pick for a romantic village stay: The Great Bustard — ten bedrooms, a garden-facing restaurant and a Great Durnford base
- For a food-led evening: The Great Bustard restaurant — Jordan Taylor’s modern British cooking draws on the estate and local producers
- For a stay with your dog: The Great Bustard’s designated pet rooms — only two rooms accept dogs, and dining with them means the pub menu in approved areas
- For adding a treatment: The Great Bustard — book the Golden Eagle treatment room for a massage or ritual alongside dinner
The restaurant or the pub: choose the right evening
The Great Bustard gives you two ways to eat. The restaurant is the choice when dinner should be the occasion. Head chef Jordan Taylor’s cooking uses produce from the Great Durnford Estate and other suppliers, with a menu that follows the seasons. The hotel’s own examples range from estate-led meat dishes to more elaborate fish cooking, so there is a clear reason to look beyond a routine pub supper.
The pub is the more informal alternative, with its own menu and places to settle in by the fire or outside. That is a useful distinction if one of you wants a leisurely meal but the other would prefer a relaxed evening after a walk. Ask which menu is available where you are booking; the pub and restaurant are not simply different seats for an identical meal.
The current guide budget is £355 midweek or £375 at the weekend for two, using a £50-per-person dinner allowance. Treat it as the budget for considering the stay, then price the restaurant or pub meal you actually want. We cannot call it Salisbury’s cheapest or best-value hotel when there is no second local venue in the comparison.
What makes it a romantic choice
There are ten bedrooms: two above the pub and eight in the courtyard buildings. The accommodation is therefore part of a small village property, rather than a large resort. Super-king beds and the combination of dinner, a treatment and time in the surrounding countryside make it a plausible choice for couples who want an unhurried overnight escape.
The room location is worth choosing deliberately. Being above the pub and being across the courtyard are different experiences, so ask which suits your preference for access and atmosphere. We would choose a room first, then build the dinner around it, rather than book solely because the property carries a luxury label.
The Golden Eagle treatment room is another reason to stay longer than the evening meal. It offers individually booked therapies using the property’s Durnford products. For a trip built around swimming and thermal facilities, compare a dedicated spa hotel elsewhere instead.
Taking your dog changes the menu
Only two bedrooms are designated dog friendly. Dogs are welcome in the pub’s bar area and on one of the terraces, but not in the main restaurant or private dining room. The pub menu is the menu served in those dog-friendly areas.
That makes the Great Bustard a good lead for a village break with your dog, provided a suitable room and table are available together. It also means that a couple travelling with a dog should not book on the expectation of eating the main restaurant menu with the dog beside them. Establish that part of the evening first.
When we would choose somewhere else
The Great Bustard suits a trip where the countryside and the property itself matter. If the main plan is an evening in Salisbury followed by a short walk back to bed, its Great Durnford location is a compromise.
For a lower-budget country stay, compare the inns in the North Wessex Downs guide. For a more substantial spa or a wider restaurant shortlist, look at Bath or the Southampton-area choices. Those are alternative destinations for a different break, not additional Salisbury hotels.
