For a dinner, bed and breakfast break around the North Wessex Downs, the useful choice is between a village inn and a hotel where the spa is part of the reason to go. White Hart Overton, the Bunk Inn and the Hawk Inn sit in the lower price bracket; Bowood adds a more ambitious restaurant and a spa, at a noticeable weekend premium.
These four stays cover different approaches to the area. Overton, Curridge and Amport make sense for an inn-based break around the Downs. Bowood is a western Wiltshire alternative near Calne, rather than a promise of a bedroom inside the protected landscape. Choose your base around the walks and places you actually want to visit.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best for food, spa and a hotel occasion: Bowood — the Shelburne’s two AA Rosettes give the food choice a firmer basis, with a spa to fill the afternoon
- Lowest midweek comparison: White Hart Overton — £194 for two in the comparison, with a casual pub menu rather than a tasting-menu evening
- Best-value weekend inn: The Bunk Inn — £220 for two, using a dinner allowance; choose it for a Curridge base rather than a restaurant award
- A good alternative for a dog-friendly village stay: The Hawk Inn — Amport offers a different base, with designated pet rooms and dinner at the inn
Where the food makes a difference
Bowood is the clearest food-led choice here. The Shelburne has two AA Rosettes, and the midweek comparison is £288 for two. That is £94 above White Hart Overton. If you want a proper hotel afternoon followed by the evening’s main event in the restaurant, that extra spend buys a different kind of break.
White Hart Overton takes a more informal approach, with a menu spanning familiar pub dishes, pizza and pasta. It is the better fit when dinner should be easy and reasonably priced, rather than the whole reason for the trip. Neither the Bunk Inn nor the Hawk needs to be described as a fine-dining destination to make it an appealing overnight stop.
The Bunk Inn or the Hawk Inn?
At £220 and £223 midweek respectively, the Bunk Inn and the Hawk Inn are close enough that location should decide the booking. The Bunk is in Curridge near Newbury; the Hawk is in Amport near Andover. Picking the wrong end of the area to save £3 would be a poor trade.
The weekend figures separate them slightly: £220 at the Bunk against £245 at the Hawk. The Bunk’s dinner figure is an allowance, so this is a useful starting comparison rather than evidence that its menu is intrinsically cheaper. White Hart Overton is £224 at weekends, putting all three inns within a fairly compact budget range.
When Bowood is worth the extra
Bowood is our choice for couples who want the hotel itself to occupy a good part of the break. The spa and the Shelburne make more sense for that brief than a smaller pub with rooms. At £403 in the weekend comparison, it is a much bigger step up from the inns than it is midweek.
For a romantic stay, that makes Bowood the more complete hotel occasion; for a walking weekend followed by an uncomplicated supper, we would spend less at an inn. A particular room or view can change that decision, but it should be a room you have chosen, not an upgrade assumed to be included in the table.
Bowood gives residents spa access from the afternoon of arrival into the day of departure. Weekend daytime swimming can require a booked slot. Golf is another reason to consider the estate, but book the course separately rather than treating a round as part of the dinner total.
Taking your dog
White Hart Overton, the Bunk Inn and the Hawk Inn all advertise designated dog-friendly accommodation. That makes the inn shortlist a better starting point than Bowood, which permits assistance dogs only.
Choose the inn nearest your planned walks, then reserve a pet room and confirm where you can eat with your dog. A bedroom policy is useful, but the evening still needs to work: a dog-approved table matters more than a generic “dog friendly” label.

If a different destination would suit you better
Compare the Chilterns if you want to compare Bowood with Danesfield House for a spa stay or Hartwell House for a more formal country-house dinner.
Compare the Cotswolds if a Michelin-Starred restaurant or a wider choice of substantial spa hotels matters more than staying close to these four bases.
