South East England: choose the dinner, then the kind of escape
A gourmet break in South East England can mean a French restaurant beside the Thames, a castle in Sussex, an Italian supper in the New Forest or a modest seaside hotel with a very good restaurant booked nearby. The best choice depends on how much of the trip you want the hotel to provide. A destination tasting menu, a spa afternoon and a walk with the dog each lead to a different shortlist.
For one night, we would settle on one area and one main occasion. Bray and the Berkshire country houses suit a restaurant or grand-hotel celebration. Surrey offers substantial spas. Sussex combines gardens, historic houses and the South Downs. Kent gives you Canterbury, village restaurants and the coast, while Hampshire makes the strongest case for a forest-and-food stay. These are places to savour individually, rather than squeeze into a single circuit.
Our best-for choices
- Best restaurant for a classical French occasion: The Waterside Inn, Alain Roux’s three-Michelin-star restaurant with rooms on the Thames at Bray.
- Best food hotel for a garden-led country escape: Gravetye Manor, where Martin Carabott’s Michelin-starred cooking and the historic kitchen garden belong to the same experience.
- Best for grand country-house luxury: Cliveden, for the house, gardens and Thames setting, with a relaxed Astor Grill dinner.
- Most romantic historic setting: Amberley Castle, for a castle stay and a five-course dinner without leaving the grounds.
- Best for a spa-led break: Pennyhill Park, with extensive pools, hot tubs and thermal facilities, followed by Hillfield’s relaxed local cooking.
- Best for dogs and forest-walking value: Woodlands Lodge, with direct New Forest access and breakfast and dinner with your dog in the bar.
- Best for an informal Italian food-and-spa stay: Lime Wood, for Hartnett Holder & Co and Herb House.
- Best for food-provenance value: The Goodwood Hotel with Farmer, Butcher, Chef, for estate-reared meat and a relaxed dinner at £258 midweek or £283 weekend for two.
- Cheapest midweek guide: Royal Maritime Hotel in Portsmouth, at £140 for two. San Clu in Ramsgate is the lower weekend sample at £170.
The restaurant is the occasion
The Waterside Inn: French craftsmanship beside the Thames
The Waterside Inn is our choice when dinner deserves to be the reason for travelling. Alain Roux’s classical French cooking has three Michelin stars, with the sauces, service and riverside setting making a coherent occasion. This is a restaurant with bedrooms in the main building and neighbouring cottages, rather than a resort with a long list of leisure activities.
The current autumn menus show why meal choice matters. The seven-course Menu Exceptionnel is £290 per person, with dishes such as charcoal-cooked langoustine and a Grand Marnier soufflé. The four-course Menu Gastronomique for October and November 2026 is £190 at dinner and must be arranged in advance for the whole table. Its £150 lunch price should not be used for an evening comparison. A discretionary 12.5% service charge and wine sit outside those menu prices.
Using the estimated £395 midweek or £450 weekend room-and-breakfast components, the four-course dinner gives £775 or £830 for two; the seven-course menu gives £975 or £1,030. The older £210 dinner allowance is not a fixed current menu. Ask for the exact room and meal together: bedroom reservations guarantee an evening restaurant table, and breakfast is freshly baked continental breakfast served in your room. A Deluxe Double does not automatically mean a river view.
Gravetye Manor: the garden and dinner belong together
Gravetye Manor, near East Grinstead, is our food-hotel choice when you want the afternoon to matter as much as the evening. Its historic walled kitchen garden shapes Executive Chef Martin Carabott’s one-Michelin-star menus. We would arrive with time to enjoy the grounds, then settle into the glass-fronted dining room as the day changes around the gardens.
The £130 three-course dinner includes seasonal intermediate dishes. The current sample offers garden beetroot with Sussex Slipcote and horseradish, or Creedy Carver duck with warm spices and figs. Vegetarian and vegan sample menus are available at the same dinner price. Tell the restaurant about dietary requirements at least 48 hours ahead; supplements and the discretionary 12.5% service charge affect the final bill.
The indicative stay-and-dinner total is £690 midweek or £1,035 weekend. We would compare weekdays particularly closely here. Resident dinner tables are reserved automatically, but discuss your preferred time and menu. Gravetye does not allow pets. Choose it over Waterside when the manor and horticultural setting are central to the stay; choose Waterside for the Thames and a more explicitly French restaurant occasion.
The Continental and The Sportsman: a coast-and-restaurant pairing
The Continental Hotel in Whitstable paired with The Sportsman at Seasalter is an appealing lower-cost way into Michelin-starred dining. It is an off-site pairing: the restaurant is listed 3.1 miles from the hotel, so arrange the actual journey and return before choosing wine.
The Sportsman serves seasonal dishes rooted in the coast and surrounding countryside. The sample menu includes slip sole in seaweed butter and monkfish with chorizo sauce. Its £60 three-course short menu is available Tuesday–Thursday at lunch and dinner. On Friday and Saturday, use the £85 full menu. With the recorded room-and-breakfast components, that makes £200 for the eligible midweek short-menu stay and £305 for a weekend full-menu stay, rather than applying the short-menu price to Saturday.
Dinner service is Tuesday–Saturday, 6.30pm–8.30pm; Sunday is lunch service, and Monday is closed. The restaurant excludes dogs and cannot currently accommodate vegan or dairy-free diets. Its menu adds 10% discretionary service. Reserve the restaurant before committing to accommodation: a reasonably priced room is little use if the dinner that prompted the trip is unavailable.
Romantic stays: castle, grand house or garden hideaway?
Amberley Castle in West Sussex gives the stay itself a sense of occasion: stone walls, mature grounds and dinner within the castle. We would choose it for an anniversary when a distinctive setting matters more than a full spa programme. It is also a useful base for a South Downs break with one unhurried hotel evening.
Newly appointed Executive Chef Matt Gillan leads the restaurant. The current five-course sample is £98 per person, with choices such as cured salmon with citrus and a hot-and-sour accompaniment, or lamb with morels and mustard mash. Dinner runs daily, 6.30pm–9pm. The £431 midweek and £536 weekend guide totals use that five-course price; matched wines are a further £65 per person.
Ask for the room’s position, bathroom and layout before booking a celebration. A castle address does not guarantee a particular bath or view. We would choose Amberley over Pennyhill when history and intimate occasion take priority; Pennyhill has the stronger case for an afternoon spent in pools and thermal rooms.
Cliveden: grand-house luxury with a relaxed dinner
Cliveden is our grand country-house recommendation for the Thames setting, gardens and varied room categories. Decide whether you want a mansion-house room, a suite or a specifically booked Hot Tub Room. The £555 midweek and £840 weekend guide totals pair the stay with The Astor Grill; they do not include a tasting dinner in The Cliveden Dining Room.
The Astor Grill occupies the old stables and combines British favourites with American influences. Its atmosphere is relaxed, with evening dining available throughout the week. We would choose this pairing when the house is the main indulgence and dinner should remain sociable and informal. Gravetye is our stronger recommendation when the relationship between garden and Michelin-starred menu is the central attraction.
Cliveden also offers a clear luxury option with a dog. The Astor Grill welcomes pets, while The Cliveden Dining Room and spa exclude them. Dogs cannot stay in Hot Tub Rooms. The charge is £60 per dog per stay, with a bed, bowls and towel provided. The Grill publishes a £2-per-person dinner National Trust fee, waived for members showing their card; ask how this applies to your resident booking.
THE PIG-at Bridge Place, outside Canterbury, suits couples who prefer a lively kitchen-garden restaurant to castle formality. Kent’s orchards, farms, coast and vineyards shape its produce-led cooking, with the open kitchen part of the atmosphere. Make time for the grounds rather than treating it solely as a room for the night.
For more separation from the main house, compare the Hop Pickers’ Huts, raised on stilts in the water meadows, with the Stream Wagons and ordinary hotel rooms. Those distinctive categories need their own quote. The £380/£420 comparison uses estimated room pricing and a modelled £45 dinner allowance per person, so it is not a guaranteed price for a hut and a three-course menu. Choose THE PIG over Corner House for the country setting; Corner House is the more economical city-and-restaurant stay.
Our best spa choices
Pennyhill Park: make the spa a substantial part of the stay
Pennyhill Park in Bagshot is our first spa comparison because the pools, hot tubs and thermal facilities can fill much of the afternoon. Hillfield supplies a relaxed, locally focused dinner, open every day. The £608 midweek/£668 weekend total uses a representative £71.04 dinner per person in Hillfield, not the Michelin-starred Latymer menu.
Booking channel changes the time you get in the spa. Direct bookings receive access from check-in until 2pm on departure day, with some rooms offering longer; bookings through online travel agents have access from 4pm on arrival until noon on departure. The spa is for ages 16 and over. Reserve treatments separately unless the chosen package expressly includes them.
Dog dining is possible in Hillfield Bar, the Drawing Room or Lily Pond Terrace, with a suitable bedroom reserved. Confirm the meal and seating when booking. We would choose Pennyhill for a broad spa experience, and Lime Wood when Italian dining and a New Forest setting better match the trip.
Lime Wood: Italian dining and Herb House
Lime Wood near Lyndhurst is our relaxed luxury food-and-spa alternative. Angela Hartnett and Luke Holder’s Hartnett Holder & Co cooks seasonal, Italian-influenced dishes, including freshly made pasta, with desserts such as tableside tiramisu. Dinner is daily, 6pm–9pm. It is a good choice when you want accomplished cooking without making the whole evening a formal tasting sequence.
Hotel residents have Herb House spa access during their stay, subject to opening hours. The £705 midweek and £780 weekend samples combine estimated room rates with an indicative £90 dinner allowance per person. Compare the hotel’s Supper & Snooze offer separately: it includes a three-course à la carte dinner excluding drinks and spa use for over-18s. Check the dates, room, breakfast and supplements on the selected offer.
Careys Manor: a lower-priced New Forest spa comparison
Careys Manor in Brockenhurst gives you Cambium’s modern British cooking and SenSpa in one hotel. Cambium has no formal dress code, with dinner from 5.30pm–9.30pm and last seating at 9pm. The £370/£410 guide uses estimated rooms and a £45-per-person modelled dinner allowance.
Price the spa session explicitly. The hotel advertises resident spa upgrades from £39 per person; SenSpa access is chargeable unless your rate includes it. All leisure and spa facilities are for ages 16 and over, with treatments for adults 18 and over. Some ground-floor rooms accept a dog, but pets cannot enter restaurants or public areas and cannot be left unattended. We would choose Woodlands for dinner with a dog, and Careys for a spa stay with the relevant access booked.
Good food at a gentler total
Woodlands Lodge: forest walks, bar dinner and a dog
Woodlands Lodge is outside Southampton centre, with direct access to the New Forest. Its £157/£192 guide totals make it our first dog-friendly value comparison. Dinner is daily, 5.30pm–8.30pm, and pets can join breakfast and dinner in the bar area.
Book an eligible room: Standard Doubles do not accept dogs. The fee is £10 per dog per night, and you must not leave the hotel grounds while the dog remains in your room. The dinner comparison uses a representative £33.11 per person. Compare its direct three-course DBB package on the exact room and menu, too. We would choose Woodlands over a larger resort when the main pleasure is walking from the door and returning to an easy evening.
Goodwood: choose the estate’s own meat
The Goodwood Hotel with Farmer, Butcher, Chef is our provenance-led value alternative in Sussex, at £258/£283 for two. Beef, pork and lamb from Goodwood Home Farm inform the menu; the Butcher’s Boards explore different cuts and preparations. This is a more tangible reason to choose the restaurant than a broad promise of local sourcing.
The restaurant sits at the hotel and offers daily dinner, with smart-casual dress. It also welcomes dogs, although the hotel bedroom and pet charge need to be agreed separately. Vegetarian and vegan guests should discuss their meal before reserving, as the meat-led restaurant says availability varies. Choose it over Gravetye for an informal estate-food evening at a much lower guide total.
Corner House Canterbury: dinner downstairs, breakfast in your room
Corner House is a restaurant with rooms in a sixteenth-century Canterbury building. At £195/£210 with a modelled £45 dinner allowance, it suits a city day and a restaurant evening in the same building. Continental breakfast arrives as a tray in your room, so compare it on that basis rather than expect a full cooked buffet.
Room choice can make a modest-budget stay more romantic. The Attic Room has a separate bathroom with a roll-top bath, original beams and low ceilings, reached by a narrow staircase. Tourtel has a king bed and bathroom with both bath and shower. Those details make Corner House a useful alternative to a country-house upgrade, provided you choose the actual room you want.
Royal Maritime and San Clu: the cheapest comparisons
Royal Maritime Hotel in Portsmouth leads the midweek guide at £140, rising to £185 in the weekend sample. Head Chef Peter Ashby’s Horatio’s serves traditional and bistro-style dishes on site, with no dress code. Dinner is daily, 6pm–8.45pm; arrive by 8.15pm for a full three-course meal. The £45 dinner allowance is estimated, so choose dishes from the live menu.
San Clu in Ramsgate has the lower weekend sample, £170, and the same midweek guide. It combines hotel rooms with an in-house bar and brasserie, using a modelled £45 dinner allowance. If the coastal outlook is the attraction, select a sea-view room and check the upgrade. Both are practical lower-cost bases; neither needs to imitate the more expensive country houses to offer a worthwhile short break.
Compare one-night costs for two
These comparisons combine accommodation and breakfast for two adults with the named dinner. The meal basis is shown because a four-course French menu, a modelled pub allowance and a five-course castle dinner are different purchases.
| Stay and dinner | Midweek | Weekend | Meal and booking basis |
|---|
| Royal Maritime + Horatio’s | £140 | £185 | Estimated £45pp dinner |
| Woodlands Lodge | £157 | £192 | Representative £33.11pp dinner; compare direct DBB |
| San Clu | £170 | £170 | Modelled £45pp dinner |
| Corner House Canterbury | £195 | £210 | Modelled £45pp dinner; continental breakfast tray |
| Continental + Sportsman | £200 | £305 | £60pp short menu Tue–Thu; £85pp full menu weekend; transport extra |
| Goodwood + Farmer, Butcher, Chef | £258 | £283 | Representative £49pp à la carte dinner |
| Careys Manor + Cambium | £370 | £410 | Estimated room; modelled £45pp dinner; spa upgrade extra |
| THE PIG-at Bridge Place | £380 | £420 | Estimated room; modelled £45pp dinner |
| Amberley Castle | £431 | £536 | £98pp five-course dinner |
| Cliveden + Astor Grill | £555 | £840 | Representative £62.10pp Grill dinner |
| Pennyhill Park + Hillfield | £608 | £668 | Representative £71.04pp dinner; access varies by booking channel |
| Gravetye Manor | £690 | £1,035 | £130pp three-course dinner with intermediate dishes |
| Lime Wood + HH&Co | £705 | £780 | Estimated room; indicative £90pp dinner |
| Waterside Inn | £775 | £830 | Estimated room; £190pp four-course dinner, Oct–Nov 2026, pre-order |
Plan the day around your main pleasure
For a food occasion: book Waterside, Gravetye or The Sportsman first, then fit the bedroom and travel around the table. Stay on site at Waterside or Gravetye for the easiest return; choose the Continental pairing when Whitstable and a separate Seasalter dinner appeal. At Waterside, confirm the pre-order menu when reserving, rather than expect it to be offered on arrival.
For romance: spend the afternoon around Amberley and the South Downs, or remain within Cliveden’s grounds before an Astor Grill supper. At THE PIG, pay for the distinctive hut or wagon only if that room setting is part of the pleasure. A standard-room guide should help compare hotels, not promise the most photogenic accommodation.
For a spa break: arrive at Pennyhill with the booking-channel access window in mind. At Careys, reserve the hydrotherapy upgrade before planning the afternoon around it. At Lime Wood, leave space for a forest outing and a relaxed Italian evening, rather than filling the day with distant sightseeing.
Which is best with a dog?
Woodlands is our forest-and-value choice, with dinner in the bar and a low published pet fee. Cliveden offers a grander stay with Astor Grill dining, at a higher pet charge. Pennyhill provides designated dog-friendly dining spaces. Careys’ pet-room permission does not extend to its restaurants, and Gravetye and The Sportsman exclude pets. Reserve the bedroom and meal arrangement together.
Which is best for a Sunday night?
Start with places expressly offering daily dinner, including Woodlands, Amberley, Royal Maritime, Lime Wood or Hillfield at Pennyhill. The Sportsman serves Sunday lunch rather than dinner. An attractive weekend total alone does not establish an available Sunday evening meal.
Should I buy a direct dinner, bed and breakfast package?
Compare the exact inclusions. A hotel’s own offer can add spa time, a selected menu or an upgraded room, while an assembled room-and-dinner estimate may give more flexibility. At Woodlands and Lime Wood, direct DBB products are worth comparing. Ask whether dinner means the full menu, a credit towards it or selected dishes, and allow for wine, service, pet fees and the upgrades you actually want.
Narrow the search to your favourite setting
For smaller local comparisons, explore Canterbury, Brighton, Southampton. For walking and country inns, try the South Downs. For an alternative in our broader Midlands grouping, compare Oxford or the Chilterns. Our spa stays, dog-friendly stays and all dinner, bed and breakfast deals help you compare the next shortlist.
