In the North York Moors, the best break depends on which part of the area you want to wake up in. Oldstead makes sense when dinner is the destination; Goathland is the more natural moorland base; Saltburn brings the coast into the choice. Crab Manor, near Thirsk, is a western-fringe alternative with very particular rooms. We would not make them compete for a single ‘best hotel’ title. Here is how we would choose for food, romance, price and travelling with a dog.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Food: The Black Swan at Oldstead — for its farm-and-garden-led tasting menu, with one Michelin Star and four Rosettes.
- Romance and distinctive accommodation: Crab Manor — choose the individual lodge or room, especially if a private hot tub is important.
- Restaurant value: Crab & Lobster — its £260 midweek comparison uses an early-evening three-course menu.
- Cheapest in this shortlist: Mallyan Spout — £203 midweek with Valley View, in Goathland.
- Taking your dog: Crab Manor — specified dog-friendly lodges and bar dining; arrange both in advance.
- A coastal base: Brockley Hall — for a Saltburn itinerary rather than a stay deep in the moors.
The Black Swan is our restaurant-led choice. Tommy Banks’s team builds the tasting menu around produce grown and foraged around Oldstead; the restaurant has one Michelin Star, a Green Star and four AA Rosettes. This is a dinner to organise the stay around. The current comparison uses the £195-per-person dinner menu, giving £620 for two midweek, with an estimated room figure.
The practical details matter. One-night restaurant stays are offered Tuesday to Saturday, and an alternative bedroom can be at the sister Abbey Inn, a mile away, when Black Swan rooms are full. Establish where you are sleeping as well as where you are eating. Choose it for the menu and its connection to the surrounding land. For a cheaper, less all-consuming evening, Crab & Lobster is the useful comparison.
Best for romance: Crab Manor, with the right room
Crab Manor is our pick when you want the accommodation itself to be part of the surprise. Its individually themed rooms and lodges make the room choice important; selected lodge accommodation has private hot tubs and distinctive bathrooms. That is a different proposition from booking an ordinary bedroom because the hotel name sounds romantic.
The £260 midweek comparison does not prove a hot-tub lodge price. Request the specific accommodation and compare its total with dinner included or booked separately. We would choose Crab Manor for an occasion built around a particular room and seafood-led dinner. Oldstead is the stronger choice when the tasting menu is the main event. Crab Manor is near Thirsk, on the western side of this wider search, rather than a central moorland-village stay.
Best restaurant value: understand Crab & Lobster’s early menu
The two-Rosette Crab & Lobster pairing currently comes to £260 midweek and £250 at the weekend. Its priced dinner is the early-evening three-course set menu. That makes it an attractive comparison with Oldstead, but it is not a like-for-like alternative to a long tasting menu or the full à la carte dinner. Make sure its serving times work with your arrival and room check-in.
Mallyan Spout is £203 midweek with Valley View, £57 below Crab Manor. We would favour Mallyan for the Goathland location and a simpler budget; Crab Manor if the seafood restaurant and accommodation are worth the extra spend. A sensible value decision starts with the meal and room you will use, rather than dividing the price by an award count.
Cheapest and best for a moorland village: Mallyan Spout
Mallyan Spout is in Goathland, despite a different town label appearing in some catalogue fields. It is our lowest-total choice among these comparisons, at £203 midweek and £223 at the weekend, with dinner in Valley View. Choose it when being in a moorland village matters more than hotel awards or a long restaurant evening.
The Feathers in Helmsley is close on price at £210 midweek, so the £7 difference should not decide the trip. Goathland and Helmsley give different bases for your days out. Brockley Hall adds Saltburn at £290, a coastal alternative rather than a substitute location. We would choose the village or coast first, then compare the menus.
Best with a dog: Crab Manor, with restrictions
Crab Manor’s published policy identifies Bardola and Ruka lodges for dogs, booked in advance, and permits dogs in the Crab & Lobster bar area. Dogs must not be left unattended in rooms, so arrange a bar table that works with your meal. Its policy carries a dog charge; add that to the actual lodge quotation. A regular restaurant table is not the same arrangement.
Do not choose Mallyan Spout simply because its bar welcomes dogs: the current food-and-drink page says dogs are not permitted in bedrooms or Valley View. The Black Swan excludes pet dogs from bedrooms, bar and restaurant. For this shortlist, the specific Crab Manor lodge-and-bar arrangement is the one we would investigate first.
Luxury and spa: a private hot tub is not a spa
We would not manufacture a full-spa winner from these shortlisted stays. Crab Manor’s selected accommodation may suit couples who want a private hot tub, but it is not evidence of a thermal spa with treatments. If a substantial spa is the main reason for travelling, widen the destination rather than book the wrong type of break.
Crathorne Hall offers another country-house comparison near Yarm, at £235 midweek with The Leven Restaurant. It is worth considering for that location and style of stay, but we would not attach spa access or private facilities to it without a specific room or package. For a food-and-room occasion, decide between Oldstead’s restaurant and Crab Manor’s accommodation; for a spa weekend, follow the wider-area links below.
