A Norwich dinner, bed and breakfast break can mean a bedroom in the historic centre or a stay in one of the surrounding villages. For the city itself, the Maids Head is our strongest all-round starting point: an on-site two-Rosette restaurant and a Tombland base. The Assembly House offers a different sort of luxury, with distinctive bedrooms and dinner arranged elsewhere.
Beyond the centre, Norfolk Mead adds a proper spa in Coltishall, the Kings Head provides a food-led village inn at Bawburgh, and the Loddon Swan has the lowest guide budget. These are different bases, so decide how much of the trip you want to spend in Norwich before sorting only by price.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best all-round city food break: Maids Head Hotel — WinePress has two AA Rosettes, with a £295 midweek guide total and dinner at the hotel
- Best for spa and food together: Norfolk Mead — two-Rosette dining and a thermal spa in Coltishall, at £300 midweek
- Best village food alternative: Kings Head, Bawburgh — two AA Rosettes and a £280 midweek guide total, outside the city centre
- Lowest guide budget and a good dog-friendly lead: The Loddon Swan — £225 midweek or £240 weekend, with two designated dog-friendly rooms
- Best for choosing a special bedroom: The Assembly House — individual rooms and suites in central Norwich, with dinner at the Unthank Arms off site
Maids Head or Norfolk Mead: the £5 question
Maids Head Hotel and Norfolk Mead are remarkably close in this comparison: £295 against £300 midweek, and £305 against £315 at the weekend. Both restaurant records carry two AA Rosettes and use a £60-per-person dinner allowance. There is little reason to choose between them on those small price differences alone.
Choose the Maids Head for Norwich itself. WinePress gives you dinner at the hotel, and the Tombland location is useful for a city weekend. It is our first recommendation when you want to explore on foot and return to one address for the evening.
Choose Norfolk Mead when the hotel and spa should fill the afternoon. It is in Coltishall, not central Norwich. Its thermal facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, sauna and steam room, and the hotel advertises a complimentary two-hour session for residents during its stated guest-access period. Reserve the arrangement that fits your stay; a longer spa day, treatment or beer-spa experience is a separate choice.
The Kings Head and Loddon Swan: pick your village
The Kings Head at Bawburgh is a useful food-value alternative at £280 midweek. Its two-Rosette restaurant makes it worth considering for the cooking as well as the village setting. Compared with the Maids Head, the midweek saving is only £15; choose Bawburgh because you want an inn outside the centre, rather than accept a less convenient base for a small saving.
The Loddon Swan has the lowest guide total here: £225 midweek or £240 at the weekend. It is the more economical starting point if Loddon suits your plans. Its £45 dinner allowance is lower than the £60 used for the three two-Rosette restaurants, so the saving reflects both the room and the meal budget. It does not establish that equivalent dishes cost less.
The Swan has two dog-friendly rooms, making it a practical lead for a break with your dog. Reserve one of those rooms explicitly and agree where you will eat. Loddon is a separate small-town base, not a Norwich-centre hotel at a discounted price.
The Assembly House is our choice to investigate when the bedroom matters most. Its individually designed accommodation includes rooms with courtyards, balconies or distinctive bathrooms, but those features belong to particular rooms and must be selected.
There is an important service difference: the House describes itself as a luxury bed and breakfast, does not routinely serve dinner, and has no evening residents’ bar or lounge after its advertised opening hours. The pairing here is with the Unthank Arms, off site, at £275 midweek or £375 at the weekend.
That can work well for couples who want an elegant room and an evening out. For dinner followed by a drink within the hotel, the Maids Head is the more straightforward choice. At weekends, the Assembly House pairing is £70 above the Maids Head, so we would want a particular room to justify the extra spend.
Which is best for a romantic break or a dog?
For a romantic city stay, choose the Assembly House if you enjoy selecting a distinctive room and going out for dinner. For an easier hotel evening, we would pick the Maids Head. For a slower break with spa time, Norfolk Mead is the stronger fit.
Norfolk Mead accepts pets in only three named accommodation options, and excludes them from the main hotel and spa. That restriction can make the evening more complicated than its pet-friendly label suggests. Start with the Loddon Swan if bringing your dog shapes the whole trip, and establish the dining arrangement before booking.
