For a food-led weekend in Liverpool, the choice here is between Hope Street Hotel in the Georgian Quarter and Malmaison by the waterfront. Hope Street gives you more scope to build the break around an independent restaurant, with Maray, Belzan and Vetch among its pairings. Malmaison offers the simpler evening: dinner at the hotel and no second address to organise.
Hope Street is our first choice for a spa-and-food occasion. Malmaison becomes particularly persuasive at the weekend, when its lower room budget changes the value comparison.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best for a restaurant-led occasion: Hope Street Hotel with Vetch — Daniel McGeorge’s restaurant on Hope Street, with dinner booked separately
- Lowest midweek guide total: Hope Street Hotel with Maray — £195 for two, with Middle Eastern-inspired food away from the hotel
- Best weekend value and easiest dinner: Malmaison Liverpool — £255 for two with an on-site dinner allowance, below the Hope Street pairings
- Best for spa time and a romantic hotel stay: Hope Street Hotel — an indoor pool and outdoor vitality pool, with spa access charged separately
- Best starting point with a dog: Hope Street Hotel — designated pet-friendly floors and specific dog-friendly dining areas; arrange the evening before booking
Choose the restaurant before the Hope Street room
Hope Street Hotel has three quite distinct restaurant pairings. Maray is the most approachable on the budget here, at £195 midweek or £290 at the weekend for the combined stay. Its Middle Eastern-inspired cooking makes it a good choice when you want a lively meal built around different flavours rather than a formal hotel dinner. Check which Liverpool branch you are reserving: the name alone is not enough to plan the walk.
Belzan, on Smithdown Road, raises the guide total by just £15 for two. Its seasonal cooking, wood-fired barbecue and smaller neighbourhood-restaurant setting make it a strong alternative if that is the sort of evening you enjoy. It is the farther-out dinner, so include the journey in the decision. A small food-price difference can be outweighed by transport and convenience.
Vetch is our occasion-dinner pick. Daniel McGeorge’s restaurant is on Hope Street itself, and the guide total is £260 midweek or £355 at the weekend. We would choose it because its chef-led cooking appeals, rather than assume that the most expensive meal must suit everybody. Reserve the actual menu and service you want; the catalogue’s dinner figure is an indicative budget, not a named tasting-menu entitlement.
Malmaison: the better-value weekend changes the decision
Malmaison Liverpool comes in at £215 midweek and £255 at the weekend, with a £45-per-person allowance for Chez Mal. It is slightly dearer than Hope Street with Maray midweek, but £35 lower at the weekend. Against the Vetch pairing, the weekend difference is £100 for two.
That is a meaningful saving if the trip is mainly about seeing Liverpool and having a good, uncomplicated dinner. Chez Mal’s modern British brasserie cooking with French influences also avoids arranging a separate restaurant journey. Choose Malmaison for that convenience and the waterfront base; choose Hope Street when the restaurant or spa is a main reason to travel.
The strongest spa and romantic choice
Hope Street’s spa includes a 15-metre indoor pool and an outdoor vitality pool. Access is charged separately and is for adults aged 18 and over, so add the thermal journey to the booking if that is the experience you want.
For a romantic break, this gives Hope Street the more complete combination: spa time, a room in the Georgian Quarter and a chosen dinner out. Its special suites are a separate room decision, rather than something included in the guide price. Malmaison is the better answer when the evening is about the waterfront and dinner downstairs, with less spent on the stay.
A dog-friendly bedroom is only half the plan
Hope Street welcomes dogs on designated floors, and dogs can join you at approved tables in 1931 and in the sofa area of the London Carriage Works. The hotel also says dogs must not be left alone in bedrooms. That matters if you are planning one of the independent restaurant pairings: confirm the restaurant’s policy or arrange suitable care first.
Hope Street has restaurants of its own, but those are different meals from the three priced pairings in this guide. If eating with your dog at the hotel is the priority, ask for the appropriate table and a separate dinner quote. Do not book Vetch or Belzan on the assumption that the hotel’s pet policy applies there.
