Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Food and luxury together: The Connaught — three-Michelin-Star Hélène Darroze and three hotel Keys; £1,680 midweek.
- A three-Star dinner at a lower total: Portobello with The Ledbury — £680 midweek, with the restaurant separate from the hotel.
- Michelin dining in Mayfair at a lower budget: Flemings and Ormer — £625 midweek, with one-Star dining at the hotel.
- Spa and hotel-led luxury: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park — indoor pool and spa, with two-Star Dinner or a different Aubrey evening.
- Romance in a distinctive room: The Portobello — choose an Outstanding or other named room for its particular bathroom and outlook.
- Cheapest in the current London selection: Kip with Mambow — £185 midweek in Hackney; a different itinerary from Mayfair.
- Taking your dog: Holmes Hotel — Marylebone rooms, lounge and bar; dogs cannot join you in the restaurant.
Best for food and luxury together: The Connaught
The Connaught is our combined hotel-and-restaurant occasion pick. Three Michelin Keys recognise the hotel and three Michelin Stars recognise Hélène Darroze’s restaurant: those are separate awards for different parts of the stay. The £1,680 midweek total puts it firmly in the celebration budget. Choose it when you want the hotel and dinner to be the main events, rather than simply need a bedroom near a restaurant.
The Dorchester with Alain Ducasse is another three-Star restaurant comparison, at £1,505 midweek. Its lower £1,102 headline belongs to The Grill, not Alain Ducasse. We would compare the two actual menus and bedrooms before spending at this level. The £175 difference between their three-Star pairings should be secondary to which kitchen and hotel you want to experience.
Best value for an ambitious dinner: Portobello and Flemings
The Portobello with The Ledbury brings a three-Star restaurant into a £680 midweek comparison—£1,000 below the Connaught pairing. The saving is real within these figures, but the stay is different: a smaller Notting Hill hotel and dinner roughly 0.2 miles away, rather than a grand Mayfair hotel with that restaurant inside. We would choose it when the Ledbury is the purpose of the trip and the Portobello’s character appeals.
Flemings with Ormer at £625 is our Mayfair hotel-and-Michelin-dinner value comparison. One-Star Ormer is led by Sofian Msetfi and has four Rosettes recorded here. It gives a specific reason to pay more than a budget room-and-supper stay without moving into £1,500 territory. Choose between it and Portobello by the restaurant and neighbourhood, not by treating different star counts as a price ratio.
Best for a spa: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park
Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is our spa-led luxury choice in this shortlist, with an indoor pool and a substantial treatment offering. It also gives two distinct dinner comparisons: The Aubrey at £1,100 midweek and two-Michelin-Star Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at £1,140. The £40 difference makes the restaurant style more important than the price gap.
Dinner’s historically inspired British cooking and Aubrey’s Japanese-led evening should be chosen deliberately. We would book the spa treatment and dinner times together, then select the room offer that includes the access wanted. None of the table totals establishes a treatment-inclusive spa package. Connaught’s Aman Spa is another hotel-led luxury alternative, but Mandarin’s pool-and-dinner combination would be our first investigation for this particular type of break.
Best for romance: Portobello, with the room doing the work
Portobello is our smaller-hotel romantic pick because its rooms have genuinely different features. Its Outstanding category includes distinctive baths, separate showers and particular garden or street outlooks. Choose the actual room description for the occasion; an entry-level bedroom does not establish the same experience.
The £680 Ledbury pairing is not a verified Outstanding-room price. The hotel’s room-booking pages also direct weekend guests towards two-night stays, so confirm whether the one-night plan is available before organising a Saturday restaurant visit. For a more formal luxury occasion, we would look at Connaught or Dorchester. For romance with a smaller, characterful hotel and a particular independent restaurant, Portobello is the more natural starting point.
Cheapest: Kip and Mambow, with a different London itinerary
Kip with Mambow has the lowest total in the current London selection: £185 midweek and £215 at the weekend. The restaurant is separate, around 0.3 miles away, and the hotel is in Hackney. We would choose it for that East London plan and the specific Mambow dinner, not present it as a cheaper way of having a Mayfair luxury weekend.
It is £440 below Flemings midweek. That difference is useful if you would rather put the budget into the city and dinner than hotel facilities. If the room, spa and service are major parts of the occasion, the more expensive hotels are answering a different brief. Lowest price and best value therefore need separate recommendations: Kip for the lower total, Flemings for the particular Mayfair hotel-and-Michelin combination.
Best with your dog: Holmes, with the dinner still to arrange
Holmes Hotel is our practical dog-accompanied hotel enquiry in Marylebone. Its dedicated pet page welcomes dogs in bedrooms, lounge and bar, but excludes them from Kitchen at Holmes restaurant. We would ask for a permitted dinner arrangement or agree a care plan before booking the £446 restaurant comparison.
Its published pages also differ on the pet surcharge, so obtain the current charge directly with the room quotation. We would not promise a fixed fee or imply the restaurant admits dogs. Holmes is a useful alternative to choosing a hotel on a generic pet tag, but a successful gourmet break still needs the actual evening to work. If dining together is non-negotiable, the bar’s permitted menu and table should decide the booking.
Where would we spend more?
We would spend on Connaught or Dorchester for the combined hotel-and-three-Star occasion; on Mandarin for the spa and hotel time; on Portobello for a particular room and Ledbury dinner; on Flemings for its Mayfair food-and-hotel balance. We would save with Kip when the Hackney restaurant evening is the trip. Keep each priced restaurant attached to its hotel total, and compare London neighbourhoods before sorting the whole city as if every hotel were equally convenient.
