Southampton and its surroundings: forest walks, steakhouse rooms or a marina spa?
The three priced stays in our Southampton shortlist offer quite different short breaks. Harbour Hotel puts you at Ocean Village with a seafood-led restaurant, spa and rooftop bar. Harper’s combines rooms and a steakhouse at Lower Swanwick. Woodlands Lodge takes you west of the city into the New Forest, with walks and a relaxed dinner in the hotel.
Choose the setting before comparing the total. A Southampton postal address does not make Woodlands or Harper’s a city-centre stay. If you want to leave the car parked and spend the evening in the hotel, all three have on-site dining, but their daytime itineraries and facilities differ.

Harbour Hotel: our marina, restaurant and spa occasion
Harbour Hotel Southampton is a five-star stay at Ocean Village. We would choose it when the hotel should provide much of the weekend: dinner by the water, time at HarSPA and drinks at HarBAR on 6th. It gives a different experience from a forest house or pub with rooms.
The Jetty is spearheaded by Chef Patron Alex Aitken and Executive Chef Matthew Tomkinson. The cooking emphasises seafood and seasonal British ingredients, with current signature dishes including smoked eel with potatoes and trout with beetroot and apple. Its waterside setting and floor-to-ceiling windows make it the food-and-view comparison we would start with for an occasion.
The £335 midweek and £340 weekend guide totals use £205/£210 for accommodation and breakfast plus a £65 dinner component per person. Confirm the current three-course menu or selected dishes: a special Coastal Menu, private dining pod or tasting experience has its own meal basis.
HarSPA has a heated indoor pool and hydrotherapy pool, a gym and treatment rooms. Agree access and opening times on your chosen rate, and reserve treatments separately. The guide total is not a treatment-inclusive package.
For a romantic stay, choose the room on its actual outlook and layout, rather than infer a balcony or panoramic view from the marina address. The rooftop HarBAR provides another setting for drinks or a separately priced meal. We would choose Harbour over Harper’s for the spa and more elaborate hotel occasion; Harper’s is the lower-cost, less formal steakhouse stay.
Woodlands Lodge: our forest and dog-friendly value choice
Woodlands Lodge is a country-house hotel on Bartley Road in Woodlands, outside Southampton centre. It has three acres of gardens and direct access to the New Forest. Choose it when walking from the hotel and a quieter evening appeal more than city restaurants or marina nightlife.
The eighteen rooms and suites vary considerably. The Deluxe Suite has a private garden; the Junior Suite has a conservatory leading to the communal gardens. There are also four-poster, eaves and budget options. If a garden or bath is part of your romantic plan, ask for the exact category and rate. Third-party room allocations may include the Eaves collection.
The restaurant serves relaxed British cooking with produce sourced locally where possible. Dinner is daily, 5.30pm–8.30pm, making it useful for a Sunday overnight stay as well as a Friday or Saturday. Breakfast is 7.30am–9.30am on weekdays and 8am–10am at weekends.
The £157 midweek and £192 weekend guide totals use £90/£125 for accommodation and breakfast plus a representative £33.11 dinner per person. The hotel also sells a direct three-course dinner, bed and breakfast package. Compare the exact room, menu and supplements before deciding whether the package or separate components offer better value.
We would choose Woodlands over Harbour for forest access, dog arrangements and the lower total. Harbour makes the stronger case when pools, rooftop drinks and a marina dinner matter more than walking from the door.
Bringing a dog to Woodlands
Reserve the pet-friendly room and bar dinner together. Standard Double rooms are not suitable for dogs; the hotel can recommend another category. Its published fee is £10 per dog per night, with advance agreement needed for larger numbers.
Dogs are welcome on leads in the bar, lounge, reception and garden, and can join you for breakfast and dinner in the bar area. You must not leave the hotel grounds while your dog remains in the room. Bring bedding and towels, as dog beds are not supplied. These arrangements make Woodlands our most straightforward country-house dinner choice with a pet.
Harper’s: a Lower Swanwick steakhouse and room
Harper’s Steakhouse with Rooms is on Bridge Road at Lower Swanwick, by Swanwick marina. It suits a stay focused on the Hamble area and a relaxed dinner, rather than walking out into Southampton’s city centre.
The menu extends beyond steak to ribs, burgers, pizza, pasta and fish. Sample choices include chicken-and-rib combinations, pan-fried seabass and lamb kofta. We would choose it for a sociable grill evening where everyone wants their own dish rather than a prescribed tasting menu.
The £200 midweek and £210 weekend totals use a £45-per-person modelled dinner allowance. Check the steak cut, sides and dessert you actually want; that allowance is not a verified fixed-price menu. Its published menu also adds a discretionary 10% service charge.
Bedroom options include Cosy Double and Comfy King or Super King, with free guest parking. Choose the bed and layout explicitly. The restaurant’s published kitchen hours end at 9pm Monday–Tuesday, 9.30pm Wednesday–Saturday and 8pm Sunday.
Harper’s also has designated pet-friendly rooms for up to two dogs, at £20 per pet per night, with bedding, bowls and treats supplied. The pub advertises canine food at the bar; agree where your own meal can be served with the dog. Woodlands costs less in the guide and more explicitly confirms bar dinner with pets, while Harper’s may suit you better for its grill menu and Hamble location.
Best value depends on the day you want
Woodlands leads on price, particularly midweek, and combines the room and evening meal in the same house. Harper’s is £43 more midweek and £18 more at the weekend. We would pay that difference when a steakhouse evening and the Lower Swanwick setting fit the trip better.
Harbour Hotel costs substantially more, but adds a five-star marina stay and spa facilities. Its weekend guide is only £5 above its midweek sample; those are indicative samples, so check event dates and current availability before relying on that small difference.
Indicative one-night costs for two
| Stay and dinner | Midweek | Weekend | Comparison basis |

| Harper’s, Lower Swanwick | £200 | £210 | Same-site steakhouse; £45pp modelled dinner allowance |

Plan Southampton and the surrounding coast sensibly
For a city-and-marina break, use Harbour as the base and leave time for dinner and the rooftop bar. For Woodlands, centre the day on forest walking and the grounds. For Harper’s, plan around Lower Swanwick and the Hamble area. Check the actual route and transport if you intend to combine a rural stay with evening plans in Southampton.
Can I eat in the hotel with my dog?
Woodlands expressly offers breakfast and dinner with dogs in its bar area, with the right room booked. Harper’s offers pet rooms and a dog menu; confirm your dinner seating. We have not established a pet-bedroom-and-Jetty dinner arrangement at Harbour, so the forest and pub options are the clearer comparisons for travelling with a dog.
Are the guide totals hotel-sold packages?
The comparisons combine one night’s accommodation and breakfast for two adults with the recorded dinner component. They do not automatically establish an inclusive hotel offer. Woodlands’ direct DBB package is a separate product to compare. Drinks, service, parking where applicable, pet fees, room upgrades and treatments can change the total.

For a historic-city alternative, compare Salisbury. Our South East England guide widens the country-house and restaurant choices, while spa deals and dog-friendly stays help you focus on those needs. You can also compare all dinner, bed and breakfast deals.
