Manchester gives you a genuine choice between a hotel restaurant and a bedroom paired with one of the city’s independent dining rooms. The Midland keeps Adam Reid at The French under the same roof; Dakota can be paired with mana or Erst in Ancoats. Malmaison is the lower-budget brasserie comparison. A spa, a particular suite or a dog changes the hotel decision again. We would begin with the evening you want, then choose the bedroom that makes it work.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Food without a separate journey: The Midland and The French — four-Rosette dining at the hotel, at £330 midweek.
- Michelin dinner: Dakota with mana — one-Michelin-Star restaurant in Ancoats; £555 midweek, booked separately.
- Luxury and a romantic room: Dakota — compare its Signature or Deluxe suites if a roll-top bath is part of the occasion.
- Spa: The Midland — Rena Spa and The French give a coherent hotel-led stay; confirm access separately.
- Cheapest: Malmaison Manchester — £210 midweek with Chez Mal, across the current Manchester selection.
- With a dog: Kimpton Clocktower — published pet welcome; confirm Higher Ground’s separate dining policy.
Best for food: The French or mana?
The Midland with Adam Reid at The French is our first choice for a hotel-and-restaurant evening in one place. Four AA Rosettes recognise the cooking, and its £330 midweek guide total is only £20 above Dakota’s lower Erst pairing. Choose it if you want the restaurant to lead the trip without a journey between dinner and the bedroom. This is a strong practical combination, not simply an award-count calculation.
Dakota with mana is the Michelin-led alternative at £555. Simon Martin’s restaurant is in Ancoats, separate from the hotel, with an open-kitchen setting. We would choose mana when that particular kitchen is why we are visiting Manchester. It is £225 above the French pairing, so the menu and experience should justify the extra spend for you. These are two distinctive evenings, not cheaper and dearer versions of the same meal.
Best for restaurant value: The Midland, with Erst as a different option
The French at £330 makes our strongest recognised-cooking value case in this shortlist. It is a complete hotel-and-restaurant pairing with four-Rosette recognition; we would look at the current menu before paying substantially more elsewhere.
Dakota with Erst is £310, roughly 0.3 miles between hotel and restaurant in the catalogue. It is worth comparing when you want Dakota’s rooms and a separate independent restaurant evening. Do not interpret the £310 headline as mana’s price: mana takes the same hotel comparison to £555. The £245 gap is a restaurant choice. Decide whether you want The French, Erst or mana first, then see which bedroom-and-dinner total makes sense.
Best for luxury and romance: choose a particular Dakota room
Dakota is our room-led occasion pick. Its Signature Suite has a roll-top bath, separate shower and generous living space; the Deluxe Suite is another bath-led option. Those are specific accommodation choices, giving you something concrete to compare rather than relying on a ‘romantic’ badge. Ask for the suite price alongside your chosen restaurant.
The £310 and £555 comparisons do not establish a Signature Suite rate. We would choose Dakota when the bedroom itself deserves time in the itinerary and you are comfortable dining elsewhere. King Street Townhouse is a different central-hotel alternative at £345 with 10 Tib Lane nearby, but its rooms page currently advertises the infinity pool as closed for maintenance. Do not build a romantic pool-led surprise around it until the hotel confirms the facility is operating.
Best for a spa: The Midland; King Street needs a current check
The Midland gives the most coherent spa-and-food recommendation in this comparison: investigate Rena Spa access and dinner at The French together. Rena’s current resident policy requires spa visits to be booked and paid for in advance. Its published £10-per-adult access charge is separate from the base £330 room-and-dinner comparison; reserve it alongside any treatment and the restaurant table.
King Street Townhouse has separate thermal facilities and normally a residents’ pool, but the advertised pool closure changes its appeal. Its spa FAQ also distinguishes the thermal spa from the infinity pool. If you mainly want heat experiences and a treatment, ask which facilities are available and what your rate includes; if a swim is essential, we would start with the Midland. This is exactly the kind of practical difference that a generic spa-hotel list misses.
Cheapest: Malmaison Manchester; Deansgate changes the evening
Malmaison Manchester has the lowest midweek guide total across the current Manchester selection, at £210 with Chez Mal. It is our starting point for an uncomplicated brasserie-and-bedroom stay. The French comparison is £120 more; spend that when Adam Reid’s restaurant is the purpose of the trip rather than automatically upgrading the room budget.
Malmaison Deansgate starts at £240 with Bar & Grill, or £250 with Sora. Those are different dinners and a different hotel location from the first Malmaison. We would compare the menu and intended evening before choosing between the two properties. For a lower-budget trip, £30 or £40 extra may make sense if Deansgate better fits your plans; it does not need a claim that one hotel is universally superior.
Best with a dog: Kimpton, but confirm the dinner separately
Kimpton Clocktower is our first hotel enquiry when a dog is coming. Its published policy accepts dogs up to 35kg, and it offers a pet-focused stay arrangement. Its current £345 dinner pairing is with Higher Ground, around 0.4 miles away, rather than Refuge in the hotel. The hotel’s pet welcome is not evidence of Higher Ground’s policy.
Reserve an appropriate bedroom, then agree a dinner the dog can accompany you to—or a suitable care arrangement. King Street Townhouse explicitly does not accept pet dogs, so it is not a substitute dog-friendly recommendation. We would rather make this distinction clear than recommend an attractive room and leave the whole dinner unresolved.
Which evening would we book?
For food and minimum movement, The French at the Midland. For a Michelin restaurant pilgrimage, mana with a separately chosen Dakota room. For a suite-led celebration, Dakota after checking the actual accommodation price. For a lower total, Malmaison. For a dog-accompanied stay, Kimpton with the dinner policy agreed. Each is a good starting point for a different Manchester weekend; the useful decision is which trade-off fits yours.
