Cheltenham has a useful spread of dinner, bed and breakfast stays: town-based bistros, a lower-cost country inn and three very different spa hotels. The Greenway is our starting point for food-and-spa value. Cowley Manor makes a design-led hotel break; Ellenborough Park offers the larger historic-hotel occasion.
Those country hotels are outside central Cheltenham. If you want to leave the bedroom and spend the evening in town, Hotel du Vin or Malmaison may be a better fit even when a country property has the more impressive facilities.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- Best food-and-spa value: The Greenway — three AA Rosettes and a £310 midweek comparison, below the two higher-priced country spa hotels
- Best for a design-led spa stay: Cowley Manor Experimental — indoor and outdoor pools, with a distinctly different hotel style from the Greenway
- Best for a historic luxury occasion: Ellenborough Park — a substantial country-hotel stay near the racecourse, with a tasting-menu dinner
- Lowest comparison: The Green Dragon Inn — £225 midweek, using a dinner allowance, in Cockleford outside town
- Best lower-cost town dinner: Hotel du Vin Cheltenham — £245 midweek with a menu-based three-course prix fixe in Montpellier
Why the Greenway is our first food-and-spa comparison
The Greenway in Shurdington combines a three-Rosette restaurant with spa facilities at £310 midweek for two. That is a clear reason to look beyond the cheapest pub or bistro: the restaurant has stronger recognised cooking in this shortlist, and the hotel offers more to do between arrival and dinner.
Its weekend figure is £455. That is still below Ellenborough Park’s £580 and Cowley Manor’s £798 in these comparisons. We would begin here when both dinner and spa time matter, then check the room and spa access attached to the actual rate.
It is a country-hotel stay outside town. If the rest of the weekend is mostly central Cheltenham, compare the location with a Montpellier hotel rather than treating the restaurant recognition as the only decision.
Cowley Manor Experimental is our pick for a design-led hotel stay, with C-Side’s indoor and outdoor pools a strong part of the appeal. It is £433 midweek in the comparison, using an estimated room figure. Choose it because you want its hotel style and spa, rather than because its higher price proves better food than the Greenway.
Ellenborough Park, near Cheltenham Racecourse, is the historic country-hotel alternative. Its £535 midweek comparison uses the tasting menu. We would favour it for a luxury occasion built around the house and estate, especially when that traditional setting is what makes the stay feel romantic.
At weekends, Ellenborough’s £580 sits well below Cowley’s £798. If both hotels appeal, that £218 difference is worth checking against real room quotes. It is not a permanent ranking: the room, date and chosen dinner can change the total.
For a romantic break, we would choose the style you actually enjoy. Cowley is the design-and-pools option; Ellenborough is the historic-hotel occasion; the Greenway is the persuasive food-and-spa middle ground. None of those choices assumes a special room category in the base price.
The cheaper stays: where is the useful saving?
The Green Dragon Inn is the cheapest midweek comparison at £225, with a dinner allowance, in Cockleford. It makes sense for an inn-based countryside break. It is not a central Cheltenham hotel or a substitute for a spa afternoon.
Hotel du Vin Cheltenham is £245 midweek and £280 weekend with its three-course prix fixe. That is only £20 more midweek than the Green Dragon, while providing a Montpellier base and a menu-based dinner comparison. Check the prix fixe’s service times before using that saving to plan a late dinner.
Malmaison Cheltenham, also in Montpellier, is £265 midweek and £290 weekend using a dinner allowance. Against Hotel du Vin, we would compare the actual bedrooms and preferred hotel style. The £20 midweek premium is not evidence of a superior restaurant; it needs to buy a stay you personally prefer.
Dog-friendly rooms are only half the decision
The Greenway accepts dogs in designated rooms and the Drawing Room, but not in the Garden Restaurant or Orchard Brasserie. Ellenborough Park also offers selected pet rooms, including some private-garden options, while its Restaurant and Great Hall are dog free. A dog-friendly bedroom at either hotel therefore needs a workable dinner plan.
Hotel du Vin, Malmaison and the Green Dragon are other pet-stay leads. Cowley also advertises dog-friendly stays, despite the missing tag in our older records. Reserve an approved room and confirm the dining area directly.
For a dog-led walking break we would investigate the country options; for a town weekend we would start with Montpellier. We would not rank the hotels by garden-room photographs when those rooms may be a separate upgrade.
