The three Chester comparisons give three quite different breaks. Hotel Indigo is the city choice, with The Forge in the same building. Grosvenor Pulford is the lower-budget country-side alternative with Palm Court dining. Carden Park is the resort choice, with The Vines and a separate destination spa. We would choose between a city evening, a quieter hotel stay and a resort weekend before deciding which total offers the best value.
Our picks: which stay suits your break?
- City food weekend: Hotel Indigo and The Forge — two-Rosette dining where you sleep, at £240 midweek.
- A more elaborate restaurant occasion: Carden Park and The Vines — three-Rosette dining; the comparison uses a six-course menu.
- Luxury resort and spa: Carden Park — book the destination spa separately from the hotel leisure club.
- Cheapest and lower-budget spa-hotel option: Grosvenor Pulford — £190 midweek with Palm Court; confirm the spa access you want.
- Romance: Carden Park — for a planned spa-and-dinner occasion; Indigo is our alternative for a city date.
- Taking your dog: Grosvenor Pulford — dog accommodation and Nelson’s Bar; the priced Palm Court dinner is not dog-friendly.
Best for a city food break: Hotel Indigo and The Forge
Hotel Indigo is our first choice if you want Chester itself to be part of the evening. The Forge shares the building, so the two-Rosette dinner and bedroom can work together without a separate restaurant journey. The current midweek comparison is £240, £50 above Grosvenor Pulford and £115 below Carden Park’s Vines pairing.
We would pay the extra over Pulford for a city itinerary and the particular Forge dinner. Choose it when wandering around Chester and returning to the hotel restaurant is the plan. If the afternoon is mainly about a destination spa or golf, Indigo is the wrong comparison to force into that role: Carden offers a different type of stay. The useful distinction is city convenience versus resort facilities, not simply a ranking of the three hotels.
Best for a restaurant occasion: The Vines at Carden Park
Carden Park has the strongest restaurant recognition in this three-venue set, with three AA Rosettes for The Vines. The current £355 midweek total uses its six-course tasting menu. That gives a concrete reason to spend more than at the Forge: a different menu format and restaurant evening, alongside a country-estate stay.
Its published dinner schedule is Thursday to Sunday. A generic ‘midweek’ price therefore needs to fit a Thursday dinner rather than imply service every Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. Reserve the table before the room. Carden also offers casual dining and dinner-allowance packages; those should not be confused with the priced six-course Vines experience. For a simpler city evening, we would still choose Indigo rather than pay for resort surroundings we will scarcely use.
Best for a spa: Carden, but book the right facility
Carden is our spa-led recommendation because its destination spa has a separate spa garden and thermal experience. Hotel leisure-club access is a different benefit. A room booking does not automatically include the destination spa, and it is an adults-only facility. Arrange the session and dinner together; an afternoon spa booking followed by The Vines makes sense only if both are available.
Grosvenor Pulford is the lower-total spa-hotel alternative at £190 midweek with Palm Court. Compare the facilities and treatment or access booking you actually want. We would choose Pulford when the budget and a quieter hotel stay lead the decision; Carden when you specifically want the garden-and-thermal experience and are happy to pay its additional cost. The £355 Carden table figure does not include that spa upgrade.
Best for romance: a resort occasion or a city date?
For a stay organised around spending time together at the hotel, Carden would be our first call: book the spa experience, a particular room and The Vines dinner as one considered evening. For a city date with Chester on the doorstep, Indigo is the more natural choice and leaves £115 of the midweek comparison budget for other plans.
Grosvenor Pulford suits a quieter, lower-cost alternative, especially if Palm Court and the hotel setting are what appeal. None needs to be sold as universally the ‘most romantic’. The best choice is the one that supports the kind of evening you want: more time in the resort, a city stroll and dinner, or a gentler hotel-and-restaurant stay. A celebration room or suite should be priced separately from the starting comparison.
Best value and cheapest: Grosvenor Pulford
Pulford has the lowest current totals of these three: £190 midweek and £210 at the weekend. That makes it the obvious starting point for a budget-led dinner-and-room stay. Indigo moves to £290 at the weekend, so the gap widens from £50 midweek to £80. Choose Pulford when its location and Palm Court dinner work for you, not merely because it sits at the top of a price sort.
For the balance of city convenience and recognised cooking, Indigo’s £240 midweek case is persuasive. Carden’s £355 is the occasion comparison, with a more elaborate dinner and resort setting. Our value choice would change with the trip: Pulford for the lower total, Indigo for a Chester food weekend, Carden for a stay in which the extra facilities will actually be used.
Best with your dog: Pulford, after changing the dinner plan
Pulford accepts dogs by prior arrangement, and Nelson’s Bar is dog-friendly. Palm Court and Spa by Kasia are not. We would investigate a designated dog-friendly room with a Nelson’s meal, then ask for that total; the £190 Palm Court comparison does not establish the cost of the pet-dining alternative.
This is a useful example of why a dog-friendly hotel badge is not enough. If the dog needs to remain with you through the evening, reserve the room and Nelson’s table together. If Palm Court is the reason you want to visit, agree what the dog will do while you dine before booking. Do not assume another hotel’s general pet welcome extends to The Forge or The Vines without checking that restaurant’s arrangement.
Choose the actual location
Indigo is the Chester city comparison; Pulford is a separate village-side base and Carden a countryside resort near Broxton. The latter two should not be presented as city-centre alternatives simply because the catalogue groups them under Chester. For a single night, we would decide where we want to spend the afternoon and evening first. That keeps a good-value room from becoming the wrong itinerary.
